Arthur Dickson Prudham
1943 – 2024
Passed away peacefully, on August 3, 2024, at his Sauble Beach cottage/house.
Arthur was the beloved husband and best friend of Janet (Pracey) for 57 years. He was adored by his children, Laurel (Prudham-Lavell), Brian (Nickole LeVear) and Keith (Caitlin Sanderson-Prudham). His grandchildren, Abby, Reese, Maeve, Keira, Nolan, Chloe and Gavin, were his absolute joy. Arthur was a loving Uncle to Heather (Rob Churchman) and Scott (Celia Braves).
Predeceased by his parents, William M. and Helen Prudham, and his brother William K. and sister-in-law, Marilyn Prudham.
Arthur was born and raised in Owen Sound, where he spent much out-of-doors time. His family cottage in Leith was his summer joy, holidaying with his parents and brother on Georgian Bay. Wil and Arthur attended Camp Hurontario which bred in them a love of canoe trips and camping, activities they pursued together well into their retirement years. Arthur’s love of the Grey-Bruce County landscape led him in 1983 to purchase his Sauble Beach retreat. Here, he continued his water activities on Lake Huron as well as multiple projects in his favourite refuge, his garage. Tinkering with all sorts of items was a happy pastime; he could fix anything!
Arthur attended McGill University, graduating in 1965 with a BSc in Chemistry and Mathematics. Continuing the family teaching tradition, he attended Althouse College in 1966. In 1978, he returned to the University of Toronto where he completed his MEd in Measurement, Evaluation and Computer Applications, which planted computer approaches in his teaching methodology. Arthur firmly believed in the power of education, which translated to his classrooms, his colleagues and his family.
A well-loved and respected educator, Arthur started his career in Stayner, later teaching in Toronto and eventually settling in K-W. Throughout these moves, his classrooms reflected his love of his subject, Chemistry. Starting at Forest Heights, as a teacher and later Asst. Dept. Head, he eventually moved to Bluevale as Dept. Head of Science. He spent hours at school creating an environment where students could share in his enthusiasm for learning. Later, Arthur left the classroom to become the Coordinator of Environmental Studies, where he worked tirelessly to empower and educate teachers. Next, he continued his curriculum focus as Coordinator for the Specialization Years. Upon retiring in 1998, he held the position of Coordinator of Numeracy. In addition, he worked extensively with the D24 OSSTF Branch in the District Executive and as Chief Negotiator, edited the Chem13 News, co-authored Chemistry Questions for High School, worked for the Ontario Ministry of Education constructing materials supporting Chemistry studies and Chaired the Ontario Science Coordinators and Consultants
Association for two terms.
Upon retirement, Arthur and Janet traveled widely, spanning places across the globe from the Baltics and Russia to South East Asia and China to sunny Cuba and Bermuda. They loved nothing more than discovering new cultures. As well, Arthur enjoyed playing
his violin in the KW Community Orchestra, strumming his guitar for family, furthering his computer knowledge, fixing «whatever», continuing his membership in STAO, judging and assisting with the WWSEF(Science Fair) and even joining the Old Salts Canoe club recently. Whether a book in hand, a keyboard at fingertip or pedals underfoot, Arthur’s life and retirement was full. Riding his bike with the wind on his face made it perfect!
Family was all important. He lived every day leading, caring for and supporting those he loved. He enjoyed family meals (especially those including cake!), visiting his grandchildren and cheering on their accomplishments and, best of all, spending time with everyone at Sauble Beach.
Cremation has taken place. Friends and family are invited to share their memories during a Celebration of Life reception to be held at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick St., Kitchener, on Sunday, September 8th, 2024, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM.
