Obituary
Arthur Andrew Eby passed away peacefully at his home in Southampton on Thursday November 16, in his 87th year. Beloved husband of Christina, dear father of Sara and very proud Poppa of his cherished grandson, Ethan. Survived by his sister, Marylou Gregson (Bert), his brother-in-law Gordon Eagles (Linda) and many nieces and nephews.
Born and raised in Southampton, Art was extremely proud of his Bruce County roots. After a short time working for the CNR railway, and training with the RCMP, Art chose a career in education, earning his teaching credentials at Stratford Teachers college, his B.A. from Waterloo Lutheran University and his Honour Specialist from the University of Western Ontario. He spent the majority of his career as a geography teacher and department head at Saugeen District Secondary School. He was a very active member of the Southampton Rotary club and was a trustee for the Southampton United Church. Art was made an honorary lifetime member of the Southampton curling club, a double Paul Harris fellow and enjoyed participating in the local Probus club in his later years.
Art became very interested in local politics and served his community first as councilor, then Reeve. He will also be remembered as the last mayor of Southampton, a honour that he held dear to his heart to the end of his life.
Art was very appreciative of the care and concern shown by many friends and neighbours during his time in palliative care. Thank you to John and Kathryn Forsyth for their love and respect, to Wayne McGrath for his continued visits and for keeping him informed on the news of the town, to Barb Eagles for all of her help and to Jennifer and Riaz Suishansian for their on-going support at this time.

A Funeral service will be held in the chapel of Eagleson Funeral Home, Southampton, on Tuesday November 21, 2023 at 11 a.m. A time of refreshments and fellowship will follow in the Bevan Hall at the St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Southampton. If desired, memorial donations in Art’s name can be made to the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation or to the Rotary Club of Southampton.
