ABBOTT, Antony (Tony) – It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Antony (Tony) Dare Abbott on March 27, 2023.
He will be deeply missed by his wife of 55 years, Joy, and daughters Katherine and her husband, Jim Miller of Ottawa and Elizabeth and her husband, Jonathan Batch of London and granddaughters Laurel, Grace, and Elyse Batch. He will also be missed by brother Simon Abbott of Vancouver.
Born in 1941 in Winchester, England, Tony came to Montreal as a child and later met Joy and began a family. Tony and his family later settled in London, ON where Tony contributed greatly to the community, including to St. Michael’s Parish, Orchestra London, St. Joseph’s Health Care, the Monsignor Feeney Foundation, The Lawson Research Institute, and the London Community Foundation. Tony was also a very active supporter of the Liberal Party and volunteered on many campaigns.
As Chair of the Board of the Lawson Health Research Institute, Tony showed visionary leadership in growing the hospital-based research sector in London. He was recognized by the research community in London with an Honorary Scientist Award of the Institute, one of only two such awards made over the last 20 years.
One of Tony’s greatest passions was in helping his many clients as an Investment Advisor for more than 40 years. He retired from BMO Nesbitt Burns in 2013.
As well, Tony enjoyed travelling, skiing, and socializing with his many friends at the London Club, where he was a member for more than 30 years.
His infectious smile, laughter, and wonderful deep voice will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Tony in predeceased by his parents Arthur Dare Abbott and Eileen Rose Abbott.
The family would like to thank the care team at Mount Hope Long Term Care for their warmth and compassion while Tony was a resident.
Visitation on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James St. at Richmond. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael’s Parish, 511 Cheapside St. at Maitland, on Friday, March 31 at 11 am.
Donations can be made to the St. Joseph’s Healthcare London Foundation, London Community Foundation, L’Arche London or a charity of your choice in Tony’s memory.
