AUGUST 13, 1930 – JUNE 16, 2023
Anton Wittmer, 92, peacefully transitioned on June 16, 2023 at his cherished Aurora home of 36 years.
He was born August 13, 1930 in the Ukranian village of Blumenthal, where he and his family lived until becoming refugees during the Second World War, later settling in Germany. He emigrated to Toronto in 1953 and married the love of his life, Barbara, in 1955. Today, we take solace in the belief that they have been reunited after their 64 years of marriage until Barbara’s passing in 2019.
At the end he was surrounded by his greatest achievements and endless source of love and comfort – his children: Lynn (Henry 2008), Wayne (Elizabeth) and Janet. He’s forever missed by his grandchildren Rebecca (Mitch), David (Phoebe), Emily (Aaron) and Jared (Eilidh) – who all shared special relationships with their grandpa that were formed while cottaging at Stormy Lake, where they had the best summers. In recent years his family further flourished by welcoming seven great grandchildren, each a testament to his enduring legacy. His presence will be dearly missed by family in Germany, with whom he maintained deep connections until the very end.
Anton built a life for himself and his family through his unwavering work ethic, generosity and intelligence. He was a successful entrepreneur in his working years, with an ambitious spirit that continued into his retirement. Whenever there was a job to do, he was always two steps ahead.
He experienced everything and gave us so much more. His story ends the way his life was lived – with intention, with purpose and with love.
Anton Wittmer was a man of aspirational character.
He was a civilian survivor of the Second World War.
He was an immigrant.
He was a family man.
He was a business owner.
He was a pilot.
He was a beacon of wisdom.
He built a life full of incredible stories, and we will forever tell his.
A Celebration of Anton’s Life will be held Wednesday, July 12 between 11:30am to 2pm.
