Annie Jean
Davison (84) gently and confidently arose on the arms
of angels on June 16, 2023.
Born November 2, 1938 to Hugh and Sadie
(Sarah Leslie) MacEachern, Annie always had a keen mind, a big heart,
and a desire to learn.
She graduated from Teacher’s
College in Truro in 1957 and taught in a one-room school near
Brookfield, Nova Scotia. Her tenacity and spirited manner kept the
children in primary to grade 12 engaged. She ensured the wood stove
was full, and the path to the school cleared of snow. She knew how to
create a space where kids felt safe, could explore, and be free of
judgement – traits that characterized her approach to life,
faith, and a future special place on a lake.
On a dare, she met another adventurous
soul, Clinton Davison, and they married on July 18, 1959. Together
they were a dynamic duo – enterprising, joyful and tireless.
They also had a vision for something larger than themselves, a place
where everyone would be welcome and lives could be
changed.
That vision came into focus on July 17,
1960, when Clinton and Annie measured off and donated a piece of
property purchased only three days earlier, and Big Lake Camp was
born! Over the next six decades lives were changed.
Annie worked for 27 years in the camp
kitchen. She prepared meals for thousands of people, often stretching
limited resources to feed hungry campers. She would arrive at 6am for
breakfast preparations and would often stay until 11pm for the
infamous «night lunches» during Family Camp. Many people
worked with her during this period and can regale you with tales of
kitchen hijinks, long hours, creative Kool Aid mixes, burnt toast, and
most of all, gratitude for Annie’s leadership and
love.
After decades in the Big Lake Camp
kitchen, Annie «retired» and spent another 10 years working
in the «Tuck Shop» (camp canteen). Here, she helped children
count out change for treats, listened to them as they talked about
camp, and helped them navigate questions of faith. She knew the
importance of seeing things from a knee-high perspective and took time
to listen intently with a caring heart – providing the same
safe space as she did during her one-room school days. In more recent
years, she helped at Family Camp welcoming people and collecting
registration and meal fees.
Annie also managed Clinton’s
business pursuits and ensured bills were paid, employees fed, and tea
served. In addition, she had creative pursuits of her own and
traveled the local area attending community craft fairs. Her ability
to bake, quilt, sew, knit, and make crafts was widely known and
shared.
Annie’s home was always open
and many people arrived at her kitchen table (at all hours of the day
and night) looking for and receiving comfort – served of
course with hot tea and warm cinnamon rolls. People knew that Annie
would not be judgmental and so they trusted her and sought her advice.
For her part, Annie felt that she was the only bible many people would
ever know and thus, she took time to listen, to learn, to understand
and offer support. She showed and showered love.
It was perhaps during her final months
in hospital where Annie demonstrated the full depth of her faith and
compassion. Despite her vulnerability, pain from cancer, and ailing
body, she consistently demonstrated a grateful spirit and offered
comfort to those who cared for and visited with her. Everyone who
entered her room came away feeling that she radiated
light.
Finally, one should note that while
Annie has two sons, many people called her Mom, Mother, Gram, Grammie
Annie, Grandmother, Mama, and other terms of respect and endearment.
It is a testament to her «love is love» attitude and big
heart that such terms are used.
Annie is survived by her sister and
kindred spirit Marion (Percy Crowley); her sons Phil (Marjorie)
Davison and Walter (Susan) Davison; granddaughters Denise (Nick
Sarty), Caroline (Adam Hickey), and Sarah; grandson Luke; and great
granddaughter Olivia (Denise and Nick Sarty). She is also fondly
remembered by her many nieces and nephews, friends from the Church of
the Nazarene, and countless people who have been comforted at her
kitchen table by her smile and joyful attitude.
She is preceded in death by her parents
Hugh and Sadie (Sarah Leslie) MacEachern, brothers Earl MacEachern
(Biff), Logan MacEachern, and Layton MacEachern (Grace), and sisters
Ruth Williams (Laurie Williams), and Ethel Murray (Vernon
Murray).
Special thanks to the wonderful staff of
the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre including Dr. Keith Short,
Amy Thurston, and Kim Bullen who provided outstanding care and comfort
during Annie’s final earthly journey.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the
W. Allen Funeral Home, 60 Water St.,
Oxford, NS (902-447-2167) where visitation will take place Tuesday,
June 20th, 2023 from 2 PM until 4PM and 6 PM until 8 PM. A Funeral
Service will be held on Wednesday, June 21st, 2023 at the Church of
