An angel that walked the earth was called home on August 17, 2023 – our beautiful and loving mom, Annie Mary Brennan (nee Mallay). She left with the same manner in which she lived her life, quietly and without fuss.
Mom was born to James and Margaret (nee Myles) Mallay on August 31, 1930. She was raised on the Southside of Marystown, just a stone’s throw from the future love of her life, our Dad, Michael Brennan. Mom and Dad were married on November 10, 1949 and went on to have 13 children whom they loved and cherished.
Mom spent her life caring for others, but first and foremost was her family. She was our heartbeat – the glue that held us. We often referred to her as the ‘Queen’ of our family as she was the one that always brought us together; not to mention her love of hats and stylish clothes. She loved when any of us popped in, especially her children and grandchildren. She prayed for us all and celebrated our accomplishments, no matter how big or small. She may have raised thirteen children and a grandson, but she was ‘Mudder’ to many, many more.
Mom not only cared for us, but anyone who needed help, especially those who were most vulnerable. Her home was considered a haven. If you needed help, a shoulder to cry on, a prayer, or a safe place to lay your head, you would never be turned away; in fact you probably wouldn’t be allowed to leave without a cup of tea or a ‘mug up’. She spent years volunteering at her church, Sacred Heart Parish, as well as many organizations such as the Red Cross and Cancer Society.
It was Mom’s faith that carried her through the many challenges of her life – losing her husband at an early age, raising her remaining children as a single Mom, many health scares, and losing her son, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren before her. It was always her faith that kept her going. Anyone who dropped in to see mom had probably seen her seated at the table in her kitchen saying a prayer for someone. A deeply spiritual woman, someone once called her the ‘Mother Teresa’ of Marystown, a title that encapsulated her remarkable dedication for helping those facing difficult circumstances and deep faith.
Our community lost a pillar, we lost our Mom, Nan, Sister and Aunt.
Many people are left to celebrate Mom’s life including her twelve children: Mary Mayo (Lem) of St. John’s, Gladys Stacey (Barry) of Marystown, Michael Brennan (Lois) of Marystown, Margaret Kavanagh (Patrick) of Burin, Ed Brennan of Mooring Cove, Bill Brennan of Marystown, Hughie Brennan of Marystown, Gerard Brennan (Meredith) of Marystown, Sandra Brennan (Chuck) of Kentville, N.S., Tish Elford (Darren) of Dildo, Jim Brennan (Charmaine) of Marystown, and Penny Sharpe (Linden) of Marystown; her grandson, Evan, who she raised from the age of two; twenty-nine grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; brother, Leonard Mallay (Noreen); sisters, Josephine Power (James) and Geraldine Lambe (Thomas) and a large circle of family and friends.
Waiting for Mom in her eternal home: husband, Michael; son, Terry; grandchildren, Cheryl, Robert, and Hope; great-grandchildren, Jakob and Elizabeth; brothers and sister-in-laws, Eli (Mary), James (Bride), Howard (Jean); brother, Gerald; sisters, Josephine and Gladys; and parents, James and Margaret Mallay.
“Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate” Proverbs 31:31
