Anne-Marie Hunter (née Allen) died on Wednesday, June 26th at 5:00 am, asleep and at peace. Born in Hamilton, Ontario on June 29th, 1933, she passed away just three days shy of her 91st birthday while in the exceptional care of St. Joseph’s Villa (Dundas, Ontario). Born in Hamilton, she was the second child of Flowery Allen (née Hurn — born 1899, North Walsham, England, died 1981, Port Colbourne, ON) and Herbert Allen (born 1896, Birmingham, England, died 1973, Port Colbourne, ON), she spent her early childhood in Hamilton and Rockton, before the family moved to Fenwick, Pelham, Lincoln Township, where she was raised on a farm of market gardens and attended a what she often described as a “one room schoolhouse, followed by Pelham High School. From 1953-56, Anne trained in the Nursing residency program at Hamilton General Hospital, graduating as a Registered Nurse (Class of 1956-B). During her working life, she studied further in night courses and acquired expertise and employment in occupational health and palliative care. Anne was active with the Canadian Hearing Society and worked to see equality in education for people of all abilities.
In 1955, Anne met William “Bill” John Hunter at the General Hospital Nursing program’s spring formal. “He was a blind date,” she often said, “who heroically stepped in at the last minute” when her original date was unable to attend. Born in Hamilton in 1930, Bill was a tool and die maker who went on to become Chief Inspector for Quality Control at WABCO. Anne and Bill were soon dating, became engaged, and married on July 14, 1956. They remained a deeply loving and committed couple for sixty-six years, living in the same small house they purchased on the West Mountain in 1959, and raising four children: Marilyn (born 1956), Douglas (born 1959), Susan (1962) and Andy (1963). Their home was always welcoming and a work of love as much of the furniture and cabinetry was made by them. Bill died in their home on March 31st, 2021, while Anne remained at the house until the fall of 2023, when she required full-time care due to her declining health.
Like Bill, Anne loved music, theatre, reading (she was a great admirer of Alice Monroe and Carol Shields), and was an accomplished maker. Anne’s skills included gardening, weaving, sewing, upholstery and knitting. She loved to travel with Bill (they visited every part of Canada except the Eastern Arctic) and for many years enjoyed pleasure sailing together and were avid curlers.
Anne was pre-deceased by Bill, her older brother Douglas (who died in the late 1930s of Meningitis), and her grandson Nicholas. She is survived by her: four adult children, her younger brother Robert Allen (of Fort Erie), grandchildren Grace, Crawford and Drew; William and Iain; Max and Claire. She also leaves behind her feline companions Sam and Suzy, as well as Zag the hound.
“At my Mum’s request, there will not be a service or funeral. Thank you to all who knew and supported her through a difficult final journey in dementia and frailty after Bill’s death, especially Hannah Es. Anne’s love for Bill was absolutely foundational to her life; she missed him dearly and it brings me joy to know they’re together once more in peace and love. They were the best parents and life long friends; it was a privilege to live with and care for them these past few years. It brings me great joy to know they’re together once more in peace and love.” – Andy Tom Hunter (whom Anne always referred to as “The 4th Child”:)
