Passed away peacefully at her beloved home at 78 Centre Steet West in Richmond Hill on December 10th, 5 days shy of her 93rd birthday. Loving wife of Alan for 52 years, Dear Mother to Jane (Michael), Andrew (Carrie), Kathy (Jim) and Paul. Dear Grandmother to Lindsey, Tierney, Kailey, Aden, Alexandra, Carly, Keiran, Ben, Mikayla and Katie. Loving sister of Helen (deceased), sisters-in-law Anne Beckwith (deceased) and Patricia Berchem (deceased), brother-in-law Hamish Berchem (deceased) and caring Aunt to Anthony Berchem (deceased), Fiona and Isabel and their families.
Anne was born December 15, 1930 in Toronto to Florence and Harvey Allen. She spent her formative years on Glenellen Drive in Etobicoke and had a passion for singing and figure skating. She attended the Wellesley Nursing academy under Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson) in 1952 and later practiced in hospitals, public health such as the Victorian Order of Nurses and home care. She also volunteered as President of Telecare, youth suicide hotline, for many years and supported many foster children, through Plan Canada.
Family and Church were the foundations of her Life. She was the bedrock of the Beckwith family supporting all of us with her kind disposition, quiet words of support and infinite patience. As a kind friend succinctly said: “Always shining, always smiling. She always brought the sunshine with her. She made us feel like we are the reason she came today, each of us that special, that cared about, that liked, that flawless.”
It was at Timothy Eaton United Church that she met her husband, Alan. Anne was a skilled vocalist and loved her youth choir and later sang with the choir at St Matthews in Richmond Hill where they moved in 1959. In 1974 the family moved from the Maralim Rd. house in Richmond Hill to the current one on Centre Street West. It was at this time when Anne and Alan became longtime members of Richmond Hill United Church. Anne was an active participant of the Shalom Seekers group and other church events. As the children grew, she navigated many adventures at Beckwith Christmas Tree farm and Apple Orchard. In her early retirement, she travelled around the world with Alan always showing great curiosity and an appreciation of diverse cultures, religions, and traditions. Anne had a love for hockey and baseball – and was an enthusiastic fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Jays. If a game was on, she was right there with her whole-hearted cheers or anxious yelps. She always enjoyed frequent visits of her grandchildren who she adored asking each what they are doing with genuine care.
Anne was the voice of reason and one that we all sought out for advice and support.
The family are most appreciative of the love, care and concern shown by Joessica Teopista Nabor during Joessica’s 3+ years spent at 78 Centre St W taking gentle care of our Matriarch.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Richmond Hill United Church (Yonge St. & Centre St.) on Friday, January 26, 2024 at 11am, luncheon to follow. Pre-service visitation is encouraged at 10:30-11am at the Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Plan Canada or any other charity supportive of those in need – Anne will surely smile upon you.
