Anna Tinga Obituary
Anna Cato Tinga
Born on November 22, 1934 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Died peacefully on December 22, 2024, at Hospice Quinte at the age of 90. Anna is predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Alex Tinga. She leaves behind her sons Rick and Ron (Cindy), and daughter Carol. Anna is survived by her sisters Corrie Van Rhyn (the late Harry), Leni Van Egmond (the late Luuc), and Cathy Wood (the late Leo). Anna will be truly missed by all her nieces and nephews, extended family and many friends, including those at Crown Ridge where she lived for the past two years.
Anna grew up in Rotterdam, experiencing WWII as a child. The family lived close to the harbour which was frequently bombed, and there she suffered the famine, the Hunger Winter of 1944-1945, in the occupied city. The war affected her greatly. With her family, she emigrated from the Netherlands as a teenager in 1952, initially settling in Codrington and then Trenton. Anna worked in the office of Bata Shoe Company, Batawa, when computer automation was emerging. She met her husband in Trenton where they were both members of the large Dutch community. Anna and Alex were married in King Street United Church in 1960 where she was a lifetime member. Anna then dedicated herself to raising a family. When the children reached middle school, she took on the bookkeeping at Tinga’s Furniture, the family’s furniture store.
Anna enjoyed camping in many of Ontario’s beautiful, provincial parks and other local campgrounds with her family as a newcomer to Canada, and later with her young family. She was an avid reader, especially over the summers at Willow Grove campground when the children were young, and later at the family cottage on the water in Brighton. She enjoyed boating with Alex, including trips to Kingston and the Thousand Islands, and through the Trent-Severn Canal System. Anna and Alex also enjoyed numerous motorhome trips across Canada and into the United States – sometimes on their own in retirement and before that, with the family. Over the years, they also enjoyed trips to Europe, sightseeing and visiting relatives. At home in Trenton, they also socialized with members of the local Dutch Canadian Club.
The family appreciates the loving, dedicated care of staff and volunteers at Trenton Memorial Hospital, Quinte Healthcare’s rehabilitation floor at Quinte Gardens (Belleville), and Hospice Quinte. Keeping with Anna’s wishes, cremation will take place. A celebration of life will occur at a later date. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Hospice Quinte or the Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation. Online condolences at www.weaverfuneralhomes.com
