Anna Sirkka Unelma Peura (nee Pahkakangas) April 10, 1926 to March 5, 2023
Our mother’s journey on this earth ended on March 5th, 2023, at the Espanola nursing home where she had resided for just over a year. She has now joined our father Eemil Peura in heaven for their eternal life. Mom was the longest living of all her siblings, born to Saima and Sakari Pahkakangas on their farm in Toholampi, Finland. In 1957, she and dad embarked on a brave adventure to Canada. They were joined by dad’s brother and his family. Mom and dad with three young daughters in tow, and our uncle and aunt with two tykes, travelled to southern Finland, crossed the Bothnia Sea to Sweden and finally took a train to Oslo, Norway. In Oslo, they boarded a passenger ocean liner, the Stavangerfjord, and set sail for Pier 21 in Halifax. Everyone in the group spoke only Finnish. Our first home in Canada was the small lumbering village of Kormak. After four years there, they established Dowling as their permanent home. Mom was blessed with a huge heart, amazing artistic ability, a beautiful singing voice, and steely determination. She always strived to do what was best for her family without losing herself in the process. For several years, she even ran her own business. Her easy nature made her a friend to many. She leaves behind many reminders of her talents whether they were her rag mats, woven on a room sized loom, or her intricate designs from many smaller looms. She was also a master with a crochet hook and knitting needles. Most visitors to her home left with an afghan or some other project. Her daughters enjoyed the matching dresses that she once knitted for them. Her sewing machines whirred late into many nights with her creations. Mom sang in the choir at St. Matthew’s Lutheran church. Mom was also a very active volunteer. She devoted many summers volunteering as a cook at the Hanna Lake Bible camp. She visited friends who were not well, she volunteered to make treats for the Finnish War Vets, she participated in many fundraisers at the church and was a member of the brigade of ladies who regularly made pulla (Finnish sweet bread) which became a church fund raiser. Mom and Dad were proud to be Canadians, and equally proud of their Finnish heritage. In their healthier years they made several trips to Finland to visit extended family groups and friends left behind.
We are mourning her loss but feel grateful that we had her with us for such a long time. Missing her are her three daughters and their families. Sirkka-Liisa Laberge (Mark) and sons Paul Laberge (Laurel Broten), and their sons Zachary and Ryan. Jeff Laberge (Karen Oman) and their daughters Eva and Henni. Raija Tuulikki Knight (Don Brickett) and daughters Dr. Leann Knight (Mick Gringorten) and their sons Noah and Atley. Dawn Knight (Paul Giroux) and her children Sara and Tommy Brenton. Hilkka Kyllikki Taylor (Ernie predeceased) their son Ernest Taylor (Jessica Legault) and their children Paige and Ethan, and Hilkka and Ernie’s youngest son JoDee Taylor. Mom will be missed by step granddaughter Donna (Todd) Brickett and their son William. She was predeceased by Patrick Brickett. Mom will be also missed by her grand nephew Aulis Pasanen.
Mom leaves behind two dear brothers-in-law and their families. In Canada, Matti Peura (Aili) and children Marjatta predeceased, Markku (Kim) and their children, Dr. Aliisa Peura (Australia) and son Erikk. Kari Peura (Tracy) and their children Cadence, Keegan, Kaarina and Tia, and in Finland, Risto Peura (Tuula) and their son Matti. A very large extended family in Finland is saddened by her passing as are friends in Canada and Finland.
Our family is deeply grateful for the dedicated care given to mom by our sisters during her lengthy hospitalization in Sudbury, at home in Dowling and Espanola. Thank you to Dr. Killian DeBlacam, for being such a kind, diligent caregiver for mom, you are amazing. Also, a special thank you to Dr. McMillan, and all the PSWs who cared for mom in Espanola. We thank our mom’s roommate Noella for her help and for being a good friend.

Funeral service at the Lougheed Funeral Home 252 Regent Street, Sudbury on Saturday, March 25th, 2023 at 11:30 am. Friends may gather at the funeral home on Saturday after 10:00 am.
