September 22, 1934 – August 16, 2023
Anna Ruth (“AR”) Atkins passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 16th at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto.
AR was raised by her grandmother Ada Dickinson in Woodstock, Ontario. As an adult she moved to Toronto and began working at IBM. She met and married Norman Atkins in 1961 and soon after they bought a home in Markham to start a family and had three sons – Peter, Geoff, and Mark. AR was committed to their family life. She was the rock that created a family home full of love and togetherness while their father was playing an active role in business and political campaigns. Many of her boys’ friends experienced the legendary “Sunday Zoo” family dinners at Drakefield Road in Markham. Great food, lively discussion and debate, fueled by companionship and much laughter were always on the Sunday menu. Some guests were never seen again after the experience! Others longed for another invitation. AR loved it.
Throughout her life AR was an avid competitor. She discovered her passion for tennis as a young mother and the sport expanded her social world and friendships. When she moved to Toronto in 1997, golf became her sport of choice. AR enjoyed her many years as a member at the Toronto Hunt Club and cherished her home on Avoca Avenue with the unobstructed views of the ravine. To better entertain her growing family, AR gathered her sons, daughters-in-laws, grandchildren, and extended family for special occasions at the Hunt Club where they enjoyed the stunning views of Lake Ontario from its perch high on the bluffs.
AR was also a member of the Board of Directors of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection and played an active role in shaping the direction of the gallery as it expanded. She devoted her time later in life to numerous charitable causes and campaigns as a stalwart volunteer whom others turned to for support.
While she lived in Ontario, she treasured her summers at the family cottage at Robertson Point, Grand Lake in New Brunswick. AR was a legendary fixture at “The Point” hosting gatherings, guests, and Norman’s political allies throughout the season. She established herself as the innovator of great times within the tight-knit lake community and made summers extra special for everyone. AR founded the infamous “State Dinner” and evening gatherings to watch the beautiful sunsets. She was admired by all but particularly by the younger generations who were drawn to her open arms and sense of humor. Her easy laughter, summer style, and warmth will never leave the Point. Even though she had not been there recently, her lifelong friends at the lake still feel her close by…every summer…and at every sunset.
AR is the beloved mother to her three sons and their wives: Peter and Faye, Geoff and Angela, and Mark and Sarah; and grandmother to Claire, Connor, Avi, Tate, Neil, Maddie, Tessa and Cale.
With gratitude from the family, AR received dedicated care in her later years from Marguerite Ramsey, the daughter of a close friend. Being able to stay in the comfort of her home was very important to AR.
A private, family service is being held graveside at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto later in September.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions kindly be made in AR’s memory to the Diabetes Hope Foundation at www.diabeteshopefoundation.com.
