GENERAL, Ann (Delores) (nee Bomberry), died peacefully at West Haldimand General Hospital, surrounded by her family, on April 22, 2024, in her 90th year. She joins her predeceased husband Ken (2019). They had eleven children: Paul (Cheri) General, Liz (Delmer) McLeod, Mary (Dennis) Humen, Terry/Greg (Karen) General, Annette General, Darryl General, Gerri General (Pat), Craig General, and three infants(predeceased) – Hope, John and Walter. She was the loving grandmother of Brandon, Stacey, Alex, Joshua, Justin, Andrew, Ashley, Cameron, Adrianne, Mackenzie, Maya, and many great grandchildren. Ann was born on March 11, 1935 to Walter and Rose (Gibson) Bomberry. She is survived by brother Russ (Yvonne) Bomberry, brother-in-law Gary General and sister-in-law Doris Myke, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings John Dochstader, Marge Longboat, Shirley Carpenter and Sandra Powless.
Ann was the first contact for Six Nations Fire Department while Ken served as Fire Chief. Once their children were in school, she began working as a junior librarian, rising to her long held position of Head Librarian for Six Nations. During this time, Ann was instrumental in acquiring the Library’s Mary Sickman Collection. She enjoyed reading, was a gifted artist and volunteered with the Six Nations Figure Skating Club for many years. Ann proudly collaborated with individuals performing research on Six Nations of the Grand River, most notably Anthropologist Annemarie Shimony of Wellesley College, Massachusetts, on her book “Conservatism Among the Iroquois”. Ann continued to promote an understanding of Six Nations’ history and culture throughout her life, with family and friends recalling many passionate discussions. She was a life long, devoted member of the Anglican Church, specifically supporting Christ Church. In their later years, Ann’s artistic side led her and Ken to establish the White Dove Craft and Tea Room where they sold their own and local artisans’ works. Throughout her life, Ann proudly recounted her children and grandchildren’s accomplishments to anyone who would listen. She was also known for her stylish dress, always wanting to look her best no matter the occasion. The family are very appreciative of the care and support that the staff of Iroquois Lodge provided to Ann in recent years.
Visitation will be held on Monday, April 29th at Styres Funeral Home, Ohsweken, from 4 to 7 pm. Funeral service will be at Christ Church, Cayuga Road, Six Nations, on Tuesday, April 30th at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, donations to Christ Church or any charity of your choice would be appreciated. www.rhbanderson.com
