Obituary
Annie Filipowich, 103, of Calgary, AB, formerly Canora SK, passed away Friday, June 19, 2020, at the South Campus Hospital. Annie was a remarkable woman of strength, courage, and resilience. She wore many hats in her lifetime, she began as a nurses aid at the Canora Union Hospital, then went to Hair Dressing School in Winnipeg, worked in a munition plant in Toronto during the war, married Charles Filipowich in 1949, where they jointly owned and operated a restaurant in Pelly SK, till Charles’ death in 1965. She then moved her 2 children back to her hometown where she was a cashier at Co-Op then managed a dress shop. She ended her career with a position as a Care Worker at The Gateway Lodge, a long-term care facility for 19 years, until her retirement at age 70. Mom loved to travel, she and her friends were always going or doing something. She loved having all her family visit any excuse for a get together.
Annie was the one of 13 children of Peter and Mary Gogol. She will be missed and is lovingly remembered and survived by her daughter, Janice Minchin (Lawrence Haskewich); son, David (Barbara Patterson); granddaughter, Sabrina Milner; great granddaughter, Peyton Milner; brothers, Albert Gogol (Marian, deceased) Edmond Gogol (Ann, deceased) sisters, Jenifer and Adeline Baldwin (Les, deceased) as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephew.
Annie was predeceased by her husband, Charles Filipowich in October 11, 1965; her brothers, Ludwig (Olga) and Mike; sisters, Livy Zulyniak (Nick), Lillian (William) Parasuik, Monica Gogol, Pauline Gogol, Nell Mazur (Peter) and Betty (Henry) Malenverno; nieces, Grace Parasuik and Marlene Werbowesky.
At the end, SHE LEFT ON HER OWN TERMS, peacefully, quietly, and quickly. She just slipped away to that big party in the heavens and all those waiting for her to join them. We love you and will miss you forever. She spent 103 years here on earth with us and now was ready for the next chapter.
The family would like to acknowledge the compassionate staff at the South Campus Hospital, the Rapid Access Unit and Unit #78. If family and friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, may make a donation in Annie’s memory to the Veteran’s Food Bank in their area.
Cremation arrangements were in care of Choice Memorial Cremation & Funeral Services, Calgary, AB. A Celebration of Ann’s Life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 10, 2023, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK, with Catherine Pace officiating.
