It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Anatoli Sofroniuc, 84, of Bālti, Republic Moldova on the morning of August 3rd, 2024. Anatoli passed away at home with his wife Ionela Sofroniuc by his side and in his heart. He will be dearly missed by his wife Ionela Sofroniuc, his only son Cristian Sofroniuc and wife Madalina Sofroniuc, his two grand-daughters Patricia (Nick Holmes) and Nicole Sofroniuc, his great-grandson Victor and his sister Magdalena as well as his many family members and friends he had made through the years.
Anatoli was predeceased by his parents Victor and Eufrosina Sofroniuc.
Toli lived a wonderful and fulfilling life constantly surrounded by people he loved. He never knew loneliness in a family where someone was always around. Toli was born in Republic Moldova in 1940 and emigrated as a refugee to Romania when he was 4 years old, with his family – composed of his parents, his sister, his grandmother Tatiana, and his uncle Sandu. They left behind his grandfather Serghei, who was later deported to Siberia and died there. He lived through turbulent times of the Second World War and Communism that shortly followed. Although the years were difficult, it did not stop Toli from being able to enjoy life in the school yard and on the river bank playing soccer, walking through the streets with friends, and meeting the love of his life, Ionela Sofroniuc. Toli took pride in his work as an electronic technician and was always able to fix things throughout the house, rarely giving up before it was working again. Toli enjoyed playing Rummy-O, backgammon, and cards during game nights with his family, and enjoyed home-made wine and delicious meals made by his lovely wife. Toli followed his only son to Canada to continue strengthening his bond with his family as the years passed. In Canada he continued to stay busy by delivering the Cambridge Times, tending to gardens, doing jobs around the house and enjoying his time in the sun. Although he did not speak English, his warm double handshake and ‘numai bine’ will always be remembered by everyone who knew him.
Toli was and always will be remembered as a kind, hard working, loving and strong man. He was always generous with his time and enjoyed life as it came. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and pets.
Anatoli’s family will receive relatives and friends from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 8th, 2024 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467. Funeral service will be held at St. John The Baptist Romanian Orthodox Church (2150 Bleams Rd) on August 09, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Williamsburg Cemetery.
