Obituary
Amber Foulkes passed away earlier this week in Oakville Ontario with her children at her side, following a brief illness. She leaves her three children, Michael (Lin), Hilary (Gregg) and Rachel, many grandchildren, and great grandchildren, one niece and one nephew, from the US west coast, France, Calgary, and Toronto. She loved them all very much. She was predeceased by her husband Frank in 1996, her older sister Mary in 2016 and her beloved daughter Beth in 2019.
Amber was born and raised in Birmingham England. She grew up in the dark days of the Depression and then World War Two. Amber attended the University of Birmingham, graduating in 1950 with a degree in education. There she met her future husband Frank, who was also a student and coincidentally boarding with a relative on her street. They graduated together and were married in 1950 . Like so many in post-war Britain, they sought a new future as emigres, and in 1952 stepped off the Empress of Canada at the Port of Montreal, beginning more than 70 years of life in Canada.
Amber was a dedicated wife and mother, and in particular a tireless advocate for her youngest daughter Beth, who was born with Downs Syndrome in 1966. She received the Order of Ontario in 1996 in recognition of her pioneering advocacy for those with cognitive disabilities. She received the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal in 2012. Amber was also a dedicated volunteer for many years with Canadian Blood Services, as well as the Oakville Celebration of the Arts. Her faith was important and meaningful throughout her life. She was always an active member of her church, most recently St Jude’s in Oakville and received the Anglican Order of Niagara in 2013.
Amber was an intrepid traveller, both with Frank during his career and following his death. They lived at various times in Montreal, Toronto, Cape Broyle Newfoundland, Wabamun Alberta and Seoul, South Korea. Travel took them around the world, often with Beth and Rachel – to the UK, US, Galápagos Islands, Europe, Egypt, Morocco, Tibet, throughout Asia and a very memorable trip to her granddaughter’s 2020 Leap Year wedding on Thatch Key Belize, on the eve of the pandemic.
Amber lived to a grand age and had a rich and fulfilling life. She was always grounded by her humble beginnings, proud of the opportunities and accomplishments that came later, and a true matriarch. To her last days, she was active, informed and engaged with her causes and pursuits, her many friends and her family. She will be missed.
Amber’s family would like to thank Dr Hawa Kamara for her compassionate care and advice, and the extraordinary people at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. Please make donations in memory of Amber to St Jude’s Anglican Church, Oakville; Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital or Toronto Metropolitan University, School of Disability Studies.
Visitation will be on November 20, 2023, from 2:00-4:00 pm and 7:00-9:00 PM at Kopriva-Taylor Family Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville. A Memorial Service followed by a reception will be held at St Jude’s Anglican Church, 160 William Street, Oakville on November 21, 2023, at 1:00 PM.
