Amanda Janine Gray passed away peacefully with the angels – soaring to heaven on eagle’s wings, May 8, 2024 at 39 years of age. She was surrounded by her loving family who remained by her side during the final moments of her life.
Amanda is survived by her loving mother Gloria Gray (nee Jiggins), late father (David), sister Maila, auntie Ann, and her beloved cat Willie.
Amanda was born in Oakville, Ontario. She lived most of her childhood in Kirkland, Quebec, where she attended Allancroft Elementary School and Beaconsfield High School. In 1998, her family moved to Princeton, New Jersey where she attended and graduated from Montgomery High School. During her time at high school, Amanda developed a love for playing the alto saxophone with the school jazz band and also was an active participant on the swim team. Amanda also loved spending time at the family cottage where she participated in swimming and boating regattas.
Amanda received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Carleton University. During her time at Carleton, Amanda joined the women’s varsity swim team, where she excelled at the backstroke and eventually went on to become the assistant captain during her senior year.
After graduating University, Amanda spent a year working abroad in Paris, France. She then relocated back to Ottawa where she had a successful career working at TD Canada Trust as a disputes analyst. Amanda also humbly contributed her time to offer support within the local community as a volunteer in numerous ways. She especially enjoyed volunteering as a green team member at the annual Ottawa BluesFest and socializing kittens with Furry Tales Cat Rescue. Amanda was extremely skilled with home renovation projects and developed these skills while traveling to various cities within the USA, donating a week of her holiday time to support Habitat for Humanity projects-including helping to reconstruct a home after the Hurricane Katrina disaster.
Amanda brought joy, spark and whimsy to many lives. Her infectious smile and giggle lit up every room. She was a woman whose gentle heart touched so many. Amanda will be truly missed but never ever forgotten. She was a fierce advocate towards breaking down the barriers that many young people face when trying to access breast cancer diagnostic screening tools and treatment options. Her family and friends plan to carry on with Amanda’s legacy and vision to support other people living with metastatic breast cancer.
Thank you to everyone who was a genuine and kind friend to Amanda. We will always be grateful for the impact you made on Amanda’s life and for showing up to support and walk beside her during the darkest of times.
A celebration Service with Thanksgiving to God and of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Ottawa on Saturday, June 1st, at 11 a.m. with reception to follow. Limited free parking available behind the Supreme Court. Live streaming available (the link will be shared closer to the date of celebration).
Amanda made it very clear that cancer did not define her. It is not a battle or a journey. She wanted everyone to know and remember that “ It’s not a fight but just a life….with cancer”. -AJG
