It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved son, brother, brother-in-law, and uncle Alwin P. Bergen, aged 43, of British Columbia. Alwin passed away very suddenly but peacefully in the early morning hours of Saturday, November 23, 2024, while spending time with friends in Kenora, Ontario.
He was predeceased by his father, Jacob P. Bergen, of Neuanlage, Menno Colony, Paraguay in September of 2020.
Alwin is survived by his mother, Cornelia Bergen ne Penner, his seven siblings: Erna (with John) Siemens, Adolf (with Erna) Bergen, Gredel (with Kennert) Giesbrecht, Dora (with Pierre) Bergen, Alice (with Erhard) Balzer, Erich Bergen, and Regina (with Marwin) Giesbrecht and their families.
Alwin was born in the Menno Colony, Paraguay, on December 1, 1980, as the second youngest of eight children to Jacob & Cornelia Bergen. He moved to Canada in his early twenties and spent time living and working mostly in Manitoba and British Columbia. He was a jack of all trades, working as a trucker, in construction, renovations and finishing, and other fields of work. He also loved traveling and spent months on the road driving through North, Centre, and South America. His latest adventure took him to Southeastern Asia, where him and a friend visited numerous countries earlier this year.
Alwin was always a family guy. There weren’t many things he enjoyed more than visiting his parents, siblings and other relatives. It was on one of those trips, visiting family and friends in Manitoba, where he now passed away unexpectedly. Proof of his love for his family was also his surprise visit to attend his mom’s 80th birthday earlier this year in Loma Plata, Paraguay. Everyone assumed he was somewhere in Asia, yet in the middle of the special celebrations he suddenly popped up in the door to everyone’s surprise.
Alwin’s heart of generosity will also be deeply missed. Material things weren’t important to him. He made money, but he also loved to spend it. Others often benefited from his generosity.
Alwin’s presence, especially his contagious laughter, will be deeply missed at our gatherings. Alwin, rest in peace!
