July 9th, 1957 – Oct 13th, 2023
Allan was born as the second child to his parents James and Rowena Horwood of Durrell, NL. Along with his siblings Marie, Cathy, Cindy & Robert, a childhood of memories was shared living a traditional outport family life in Twillingate. Allan’s siblings held a very special place in his heart, and he often shared special stories of their precious days together.
After finishing school, Allan joined the Armed Forces and traveled to many parts of the world as a Peacekeeper. He served his country for 20 years before retiring to pursue his Social Work degree and serve his fellow community of veterans and their families. Allan’s daughters, Vanessa, and Sarah lit up his life and his love and pride for them and his grandchildren was infinite. Allan and his partner Cindy enjoyed a beautiful life for 11 years filled with happy adventures, peaceful days and, very often, a house full of family around their table.
Allan loved to spend precious time with his family, especially his daughters and grandchildren Alyssa, Logan, Joshua, Selina & Annie, and his honorary grandchildren John Isaac, Jack & Marron. Special memories are of motorcycle Rides for Dad with his girls, beach fires, making “baking powder” dough boys, and cutting up slabs with his brother Robert at their family home in Twillingate.
He was the best of us and he brought color and magic to those closest to him…and to the children of Kenmount Terrace every Hallowe’en (his favorite time of the year), his winter snow sculptures, and as Santa Claus for the Military Family Resource Centre. A chuckle, a treat and a spooky scare were the little moments that will remain the biggest moments we will all cherish.
To know Allan was to love him. He was an uncommonly kind, incredibly generous, loving, and hard-working person. He brought comfort to those around him and if he knew you loved a special kind of treat, you would have it in your hands before you knew it. He loved jokes, was a famous Magician in the eyes of his grandchildren and loved to make people laugh. He loved Newfoundland, active weather, and the outdoors deeply; going for hikes to Cod Jacks Cove was one of his favorite things to do. He was a faithful Toronto Maples Leafs fan and enjoyed his daily cups of Tim Horton’s coffee.
Allan was pre-deceased by his parents and left with love in our hearts forever are Allan’s daughters, Vanessa and Sarah, his partner Cindy, siblings, Marie (Wayne), Cathy, Cindy (Rick) and Robert (Jennifer), his grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and a large circle of extended family members and friends.
In honor of Allan, find some magic in the little things, enjoy an after-supper ice cream cone, take a walk in the wind, try your luck on a lotto ticket and share every moment you can with your loved ones.
In lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate donations to the Wounded Warriors of Canada (Registered Charity) CRA# 82808-2727-RR0001
