Obituary of Allan Duncan “AD” MacLellan
It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of AD (Allan Duncan) MacLellan, age 87, on March 10th, 2024, at his home in Malignant Cove with his loving family at his bedside.
AD was the eldest son of Hugh Dan MacLellan and Tilly (MacDonald) MacLellan and husband of his wife of 64 years, Mary MacLellan.
AD grew up in Clydesdale and loved to share cherished memories of his youth – tending the cows in the meadow with his faithful dog, Sparky, horse back riding on his spunky horse, Queenie, dare devil skiing, with his brother, Peter, down the mountain on skis they crafted themselves, fishing in the Clydesdale river, hunting on Brown’s Mountain, bringing home a bountiful harvest of rabbit, deer and moose. (They were legal at that time. (Maybe!). His school days, in the little school in Clydesdale, were fondly remembered with tales of jokes and tricks on teachers and fellow classmates.
At age 18, AD joined the army and spent several years on a Peace Keeping Mission in Germany. He was proud to be recognized as a veteran and enjoyed the friendship and comradery of the Antigonish Royal Canadian Legion. A cold beer after a hard days work may also been an incentive.
AD worked for many years at the family sawmill on the outskirts of the town on College Street.
He was a skilled carpenter, building numerous homes and structures through out Antigonish town and county. He often was called upon to make needed repairs to homes of seniors and those in need, as well as a volunteer on many community building projects.
AD spent many years working for Martin Marietta Quarry in Port Hawkesbury where he met many good friends.
In 1959, he married his wife, Mary (Wallace). They raised their family in her home community, Malignant Cove.
AD is survived by his wife, Mary, his loving children, Hugh John, Robert «Bud» (Noreen), Freddy, Danny and his daughter, Angie (Jack) who cared for him throughout his illness. Brother Gerard (Ann), sisters Bertina, Millie, Margie (John), Anna (Mike), Eileen (Billy), Claire (Jerry), sisters-in-law Tish and Lynn. Grandchildren Shane, Erin, Zac, Zoe, Maggi and Adam. Great grandchildren, Madison, Kiley and Oliver as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brothers, Peter, Donnie, Jimmy, Robbie, Angus and Johnny.
Special thanks to Home Care Workers who administered to AD daily with loving and compassionate care, Dr. Eckhart, Palliative Care Team, St. Martha’s Hospital, devoted care giver, Lori Spinks, Antigonish Care Van volunteer drivers and Cathy.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 13 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm in MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant Street. Funeral mass 11 am on Thursday in St. Margaret of Scotland Church, Arisaig.
Donations may be made to St. Martha’s Regional Hospital Foundation.
