Allan King Obituary
Alan was born in the small town of Glenboro, Manitoba. As a youngster, he had a paper route for several years. He was a good worker even at that age and was awarded a trip to Minneapolis for selling the most new subscriptions of all paper boys in his district.
With the addition of a new family member, Wilma, the King family moved to Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan. Here Alan enjoyed hunting and fishing with his like-minded friends. The school Alan attended in Hudson Bay was Grade 5 to 12. Alan’s friendly and competent nature led to his being President of the School Council in his Senior year, Grade 12.
On leaving High School he obtained a job with the railway loading and unloading boxcars. A few years later he decided to pursue higher education and left Hudson Bay for the University of Saskatchewan for two years in the Commerce faculty. Here he met his future wife, Maureen.
Having spent summers employed by Crown Trust Investments in Calgary, Alan now assumed full time employment with this firm. Before long he was promoted to a managerial position and this meant a move to Vancouver. It was here that Alan and Maureen were married in 1968.
Again before long, Alan was promoted. He was now Assistant Vice President at Crown Trust and he and Maureen moved to Toronto. They spent 30 happy years in Toronto. It wasn’t all work for Alan and he skipped an enthusiastic curling team for many years.
On retiring Maureen and Alan chose Kelowna for their home. During their years in Kelowna they made many friends. Many of these friendships started while playing bridge. Both he and Maureen played bridge and soon became a highly competent pair. This competence and friendly competitiveness led to their winning Gold at the BC Senior Games bridge tournaments, one in Kamloops and one in Richmond. Alan and Maureen also enjoyed cruises to many and varied parts of the world. Alan fulfilled a dream when one of these cruises was to the Galapagos Islands. He could tell all and sundry about the blue footed booby, a sure favorite for this Canadian man.
Alan had a great sense of humour and loved to laugh. He was a loyal friend and always a gentleman. His ready laugh and zest for life will be sorely missed by the many who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Maureen, sister, Wilma and many cousins. Sister-in-law Orlis Morgan and brother-in-law Rusty Morgan — Brother-in-law Garth Wiggins and sister-in-law Marilyn Wiggins. One niece and several nephews.
A Family Graveside will take place in the Glenboro Cemetery at a late date.
