It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of
Allan Roy Hicks, age 87, of Springhill,
NS. Allan passed away at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on
Wednesday, April 12, 2023, surrounded by family. Al was born on April
24th,1935 in Port Clyde, Shelburne County, Nova Scotia.
He was a son of the late Herman and Ruby (Murphy)
Hicks.
Allan met Genevieve Annie Jane Ryan (Annie), his first love,
early in life, and they married in 1954.Together they had 6 beautiful
children. Allan enlisted in the military as a Diesel Mechanic. His
military career saw him through various postings in the Maritimes, as
well as tours of duty in Egypt and Cypress. After discharge, the young
Hicks family settled in Springhill where Al continued to work as a
mechanic for a number of years. In 1979, he pursued employment with
Correctional Service Canada at Dorchester Penitentiary as a
Correctional Officer, later transferring to Springhill Institution
where he retired after 17 years of service. Allan and Annie loved to
dance, and they brought home more than a few trophies for their
efforts on the dance floor. They also loved to camp with the family,
spending many happy summer nights in their tent trailer. In 1997, the
family was devastated by the loss of Annie following a short battle
with cancer.
Allan was blessed to once again find love and happiness with
his Chickie, and in turn, gained a second family. Together, they never
stopped socializing and sharing a laugh. They could be found bowling,
playing cards or spending an evening at the camp.
Allan was an avid outdoorsman; you could often find him at
his favourite fishing holes at Economy Lake (which may or may not have
added a few dents to the boat), Cranberry Lake or River Phillip. He
also loved hunting and four-wheeling. His favourite hobby by far,
though, was time spent with his family, and dear friends that felt
like family. (and maybe tormenting them a time or two!)
Al will be dearly missed by his children Allan Jr (Tracy)
Hicks, Michael (Laura) Hicks, Gay-Marie Rushton, Cecil (Michelle)
Hicks, Barbara (Kirk) Gallagher, and Timothy Hicks; step-children
Allan (Inez) Boss, David (Leah) Boss, Arnold (Lisa) Boss, Deborah
(Glen) McMaster, and Linda (Murray) Scott; sisters Helen and Barbara;
numerous grandchildren, great- grandchildren, great great
grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his 1st
wife, Annie J. G. (Ryan) Hicks and his 2nd wife Natalie
«Chick» (Smith-Boss) Hicks, brothers Stanley, Ernest,
Charles, Arnold, Clarence, James (Jimmy), Bernley, Cecil, and sister
Nancy.
