Obituary
Alice Snatenchuk, a remarkable force of nature, passed away in Toronto on September 12, 2023 just shy of her 99th birthday. She was born on September 26, 1924, in a tiny rustic prairie farmhouse near Wakaw, Saskatchewan to Francis Watchowski and Telmon Matkowski. Raised as the fifth of eight children, my Mom’s journey was marked by resilience, determination and an unwavering spirit. ( survived by her sister Grace Nedokis)
Despite only completing grade 5, my Mom evidenced her intelligence and shrewdness at the earliest of age. In the 1940’s, she displayed her savvy by purchasing a Toronto duplex on Delaware and Bloor, a property that still stands today. Alice’s ingenuity led her to rent out two floors of the duplex, then using the rental income to pay off the property. Her business acumen was prescient. Her love journey began in the 1940’s when she met Dad (Michael Snatenchuk) and eventually married in 1947. An adventurous spirit brought them to an incredible decision in 1959 when they embarked on a journey to purchase a lot of land in Etobicoke. Their home was built in 1960 under the very close supervision of Dad. Tragedy struck in 1981 when Dad passed away, leaving Mom to navigate life’s ups and downs as a single parent of two. Despite this heartbreak, she remained resilient, strong and devoted to her family’s well being. Mom continued to live in her home, independently and happy for the next 39 years.
I admired her green thumb and love of gardening. Mom transformed her garden into her kingdom, nurturing the most delicate seedlings into magnificent plants year after year. Her tomatoes were a prized produce, deeply cherished by the lucky few. Her rock garden showcased a warm artistic side, adding beauty and serenity to her Etobicoke surroundings. Mom’s love for her family knew no bounds. She nourished their hearts and bodies, always ensuring that each meal she prepared was a feast to be remembered. Her dedication to homemade meals and the warmth of her kitchen created cherished memories. Her sauerkraut, perogies, cabbage rolls, raisin bread and cinnamon buns were loved by family and friends, tantalizing their taste buds with undeniable goodness. Mom’s talents extended beyond the kitchen and garden. She poured her heart and soul into varied crafts including quilting, knitting, and crocheting. As a skilled seamstress, she worked for the famous Canadian designer “Mister Leonard” in the 1960’s. Her handmade blouses are among my fondest keepsakes.
Her famous sayings, such as “make hay when the sun shines” or “never wait until tomorrow” reflected her determination. She always urged everyone to seize opportunities and act with purpose.
To Mom, her immediate family was the centre of her world. Her love for her family, her son in law ,Peter Goulimis, who she would love to tell her stories too, and her beloved grandsons Pierce and Mathew, was immeasurable. Their presence brought her immense joy and she cherished every moment with them. She was fortunate to reconnect with Michael, her eldest grandson, and his wife Courtney.
The gates of heaven have opened and have welcomed her with open arms. Now in peace and free from pain she is finally reunited with Dad, David and Gary. Her legacy is one of strength, resilience, and love. Her determination, culinary delights, gardening prowess and creative talents will be deeply missed by our family and all those who had the privilege of knowing her. Forever loved and cherished, you will eternally reside in our hearts!
Love you Mom. Thank you for everything.
A tremendous thank you to Dr Matthew Ng of the Etobicoke Medical Centre and Dr James Meuser of the Tammy Latner Centre for Pallative Care for their continuous compassion and care. To all the nurses and staff in the Pallative Care Unit at St Michaels Hospital – thank you.
