Alice’s Obituary
It is with profound sadness that we advise you of the peaceful passing of Alice Snow, age 89 years 11 months at the Palliative Care Unit of Western Memorial Regional Hospital. Alice was diagnosed with cancer just 11 days earlier. She passed on her own terms having chosen Palliative Care over surgery.
Alice is predeceased by her parents Chesley and Margaret (Hillier) Snow and the joy of her life, her brother, Brian (2021) and by Ruth Baker (Perry) and Renee Sheppard (Perry).
Left to mourn are: Her honorary Grandson, Neil Barney and Nancy and her Honorary Great Grandsons, Finley and Emerson; Laverne Cullihall who opened her home to Brian and Alice 25 years ago, and Laverne’s siblings, especially Yvonne and Monty Hillier of Fort McMurray. Her second family- the children of Gilbert and Audrey Perry- Sandra, Sharon Cox (Lou) of Topley, BC and Glenn and their children; Her best friend of 60 years – Major Wavey Penney and her husband Major Ed Penney of St. John’s; Major Wayne and Betty Ann Pike, Major Wayne Pritchett and his family and friend May Janes.
Through Brian’s involvement in the Salvation Army and the community, Alice adopted his friends and buddies including: Glendene and Bob Cull, Joanne and David Hoffe, Claude and Faye Lush, Juanita and Art elms, Doug and Christine Preston, Ben and Nola Feltham, Stan and Ida Pinksen and Lily Ball.
Alice also wanted to acknowledge Andrew Crocker and Jean Young.
Alice was born in Campbellton, NL and moved to Deer Lake with her parents as a young child. Over the years she worked at Goodyear Humber Stores, Wellon’s Store, Bridger’s Store and the High School cafeteria. But she became better known as a Babysitter and that responsibility brought her more joy than could ever be measured. She began that responsibility at the age of 12 when Sandra as their parents shared the same house on Spence’s Lane with Alice’s grandmother and her husband Louise and Abner Chaulk.
Her dedication to the family of Paul and Cathy Young lasted to the very end with special mention of Christopher and Jenna and their children Zachrey and Katie and Michelle and Gary and their children Claire, Sophie and Bennett (Benny). Alice travelled to St. John’s as recently as October to visit Michelle and her children while they were visiting from New Jersey.
Her dedication to Neil and his children, Finley and Emerson is beyond measurement. Even though Neil moved From Deer Lake to Nova Scotia then British Columbia, they were in contact regularly.
Alice dedicated her life to the Glory of God at a very young age and donned the Salvation Army uniform at the age of 16. She remained true to her faith every day since. She participated in all aspects of church life and played musical instruments in the band for many years, finishing by playing the drums about one month before her passing. She also enjoyed the tambourine (much to Brian’s chargin).
It should be mentioned that Alice loved to travel – as long as the wheels were on the ground, that it was NOT over the water and that Brian was in the crowd.
Her entertaining of Brian’s and Laverne’s friends is legendary and Alice wanted the help o f no one in preparing Sunday dinner or fish and brewis for Good Friday for crowds of 5 to 15 or more.
Also, it was her pleasure to bake various fruit and Christmas cakes for 25 – 30 people every year. She felt that it was her duty.
Alice Snow will be greatly missed.
Laverne, Neil and Sandra would like to thank the staff in ER and the 4th floor at the hospital and the Palliative Care Unit with special mention of Dr. Smallwood who told Alice he was inspired by her.
Lastly we want to thank the friends who called and came to visit Alice over the past 11 days. We truly appreciate your support.
Visitation will be held Parsons Funeral Home on Saturday, April 15th,2023 from the hours of 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm.
