Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that the families of the late Ali Souaby announce his passing on February 16th, 2024, at the WMRH Palliative Care unit surrounded by family.
Ali was born in Morocco on June 5th, 1951, and moved to Canada in the late 1970’s where he started work in Fort McMurray as a machinist and millwright until his retirement in 2015. One of Ali’s greatest loves besides the love for his family was the sport of soccer. Ali was well known in Fort McMurray during his soccer years and was considered the best player back in the day. His other love was travel. Ali was a very humble, compassionate, and kind man who never judged anyone. This was not in his nature. He would try to help out wherever he could, especially the less fortunate. Ali gained many friends during his lifetime, through work, sports and travel and was held with the utmost respect by all that knew him. Ali loved his family dearly and had a very special bond with his brother Mostafa and niece Somia. Somia was like a daughter to him, and he was very proud of her. Ali and his brother talked regularly, and Ali couldn’t wait to go to Morocco every year to spend quality time with his brother, niece, and nephews. He would look forward to this every year. Ali also loved his family in Pasadena. He enjoyed our family gatherings, stories, and laughs. He was a quiet and soft-spoken man, but he enjoyed the family, this meant so much to him. Ali will be sorely missed by all that knew him. Left to cherish Alis’ memories are his lifelong partner Peggy Ryan, his family in Morocco, brother Mostafa Souaby, niece Somia Souaby, nephews Mohammed, Abderhmane, Omar and Youssef Souaby. Mother in-law Margaret Ryan, brothers, and sisters’ in-laws Bob (Sandra), Laura (Greg) Montgomery, Connie (Gary) Fiander, Gus, John (Sherry), Art and Tracy. Special friend Niaoma Randell who was like a sister to Ali and many other nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents (father) Fares Ben Ahmed, (mother) Fettouma Ben M Barek, (father in-law) Joseph Ryan, (sister in-law) Debbie Ryan and fur baby Rex.
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Dr. Kate Lafferty and the team at WMRH Palliative Care unit, WMRH Emergency Dept., Ambulance drivers, Dr. AL-Maliki, Dr. Peacock, Dr. Power, and Father Terry. A special thank-you to Julia Nash, Jean Hall, Fran and Richard Blackwood and my sister and brother Connie Fiander and John Ryan for your support, kindness, and compassion throughout Ali’s illness. I will never forget, and I know Ali knew you were with us every step of the way and he would have appreciated everything you have done to help me trough such a difficult time. Also, to the Muslim brothers, who were so kind to reach out to us at the hospital, I will never forget your kindness and help in honoring Alis’ religion, traditions, and prayers. His family in Morocco is very grateful that you were able to do this. Also thank-you Dave Parsons in doing what I though was the impossible. Dave, you stepped up to the plate and made my worries disappear. And the way you honored the Muslim tradition in preparing Ali on his final journey. I will truly remember your kindness and compassion for the rest of my life. You are truly a good man to my family and friends far and near. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart; I will never forget your kindness.
A traditionally Muslim service will take place at the St. David’s Anglican Church Cemetery in Pasadena, NL, on Monday, February 19th, 2024, at 1:00 pm.
