On September 7, 2023, our hearts were shattered as we said goodbye to Algis Vitkus.
Algis passed suddenly at the age of 71, in CGMH. His wife and son were by his side.
Algis «Al», loving husband of Irena (nee Astrauskas) for 44 years, and dear father to Alexander. Beloved brother to Dana Ceponis (Peter) and Vytas (Huguette). Dear nephew to Kestutis Grigaitis (Deborah) and Birute (Dr. Aleksas Spudas). Leaving behind his dear cousins Monika, Ilona, Richard, Paul, and Kristina. He is cherished by his in-laws Vida Kazlauskas (Algis), Elena Astrauskas, his niece and nephew Loretta and Michael, and their respective children.
Algis was a true embodiment of selflessness, always putting the needs of his wife and son before his own. As a provider, he demonstrated unparalleled dedication, ensuring that his family never wanted for anything. His role as a husband and father was one filled with adoration and pride.
Al moved his family to Wasaga Beach 35 years ago and commuted to the Chrysler Assembly Plant in Brampton until his early retirement 9 years ago due to a debilitating hip injury. Unfortunately his dreams of a happy retirement were quashed by health issues related to his hip and legs. He suffered years of painful wound care and some hospital stays. Despite this, Al strove to remain positive, and the cozy haven of his home in Wasaga Beach, which he affectionally called «The Shire», brought him solace and contentment. He possessed an insatiable thirst for knowledge, delving into the realms of historical, fictional, and whodunit novels. Through literature, he enriched his mind and transported himself to captivating worlds. Travel held a special allure for him, the most memorable trip was a month long journey to B.C. with his wife and son. Though his unfortunate disability curtailed his journeys, the spark of wanderlust always remained within him.
His family has been tremendously proud of his work ethic. His unfailing ambition to graduate Ryerson was realised when he achieved his Business Administration degree while simultaneously working full time at the Chrysler plant. This helped to advance him to the role of Area Manager.
Algis’s meticulous nature combined with an innate poetically creative spirit, set him apart as a unique individual. He possessed a keen eye for beautiful and unusual photography he found on the internet, capturing moments of life’s intricacies and sharing them with his cherished family and friends. His artistry was a testament to his ability to find beauty in the simplest of things.
Proud of his Lithuanian heritage, Algis carried his roots with grace and dignity. Embracing his cultural heritage enriched his spirit and nurtured his sense of belonging.
May his soul find eternal peace and may the legacy of his love continue to illuminate the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to have witnessed its brilliance.
In honour of Al’s memory, a Celebration of Life will be held in the Fall, with family and friends being notified.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given to the charity of their choice.
