Alfred Carl Fisher Obituary
ALFRED CARL FISHER
March 04, 1941 – November 03, 2024
Carl passed away peacefully on November 3, 2024 at the age of 83 surrounded by his family.
He will be missed and survived by his wife Mae; his daughters Dina (Walter Mellett), and Shelley (Richard Pontello) as well as his brother Wayne (Therese); sister in law Bev Rohl; a great many cousins, friends, nieces and nephews, fellow controllers and numerous acquaintances he made through the various positions he held. He loved his grandchildren (Owen, Madeline, Aniela and Rosa) unconditionally and was exceptionally proud of all their accomplishments. They were the bright lights of his life.
He was predeceased by his mom and dad (Ozzie and Polly), his infant son (Darcy), his sister and brother in laws (Joan and Sonny Dunlop, George and Coila Lumsden, Jay and Alice Webster; Lynn Scott and Edith and Rose Scott; as well as Mae’s mother and father (Merle and Elizabeth Scott).
Carl was born and raised on a family farm where he learned the habits of hard work, perseverance, dedication and resilience. These attributes served him well after completing an aeradio course and taking employment in Coral Harbour, NWT; Churchill, Manitoba; and Yorkton and Swift Current, Saskatchewan. In 1965 Mae and Carl were married and they returned to Churchill for 3 years before transferring to Brandon, Manitoba. While in Brandon, Carl applied for Air Traffic Control and completed the required courses which eventually led to him being a controller in Winnipeg. While in Winnipeg, he chose to become involved with the Air Traffic Controllers Association (CATCA) as a Union representative and served in various positions with the Union which even led to him becoming the President of the national Association in 1987 for a two year term. After retiring from Air Traffic Control he decided to do long haul trucking as a second career and then officially retired in 2019.
Carl was a political junkie and followed U.S. and Canadian political decisions and elections with great interest. He loved to debate/argue/rehash all political misgivings and strategies with whomever wished to engage. He took this same zeal into debating sports such as football, curling and golf. He was a keen card player, an impatient golfer and a good sport in any game that he played. He would attempt just about any repair on just about anything usually accompanied with some fine language. His sense of humour was always present and you always knew that you would be laughing over some silly endeavour/mishap/bad golf shot/or just life in general when he was around.
He was a unique positive individual who will be missed by all who loved and knew him. His life’s journey was his best adventure. May your life’s adventures and experiences be as varied and wild as his were.
According to Carl’s wishes a memorial tribute will take place in Manitoba in mid to late June 2025 (exact date to be decided). Funeral arrangements by Snodgrass Funeral Homes, www.snodgrassfuneralhomes.com
