Alexander Edward Scharf was the legal name given to the firstborn son of Lester and Margaret Scharf on May 9, 1946, but he was usually “Alex”. Alex had two brothers, Norman, born in 1949 and Jack in 1952.
They were quite a mischievous trio; trying all kinds of experiments and all sorts of feats, and Alex often was the “master planner”!
Alex started school when he was six, riding his pony over the hill to LaRiviere School. He went to Manitou for high school, graduating in 1964 – the last class to graduate from Manitou High School. Nellie McClung Collegiate opened the next fall. He was always at the top of the class for marks and enjoyed school for the most part.
He had many varied interests and talents. Animals played a big role, especially horses and cattle. He enjoyed nature and exploring books and had a mind full of facts and dates and stories. He decided to add beekeeping to his list around the age of 12 but it seems his mother always did most of the sticky work!
During and after high school, he worked with his Uncle Ambie in the summers “playing in the dirt and mud” as he put it. Alex had a fascination for crawler tractors and nothing was better than using one. In fall 1964 he went to Red River college in Winnipeg, enrolled in Diesel mechanics.
He was employed by many different companies and people. Too many to list! Ford, International Harvester, Allis Chalmers, Case – he tried all of them! He tried his skill as a small airplane mechanic but he was still a farm boy; tired of city life, and returned to farming and bulldozing. He still had a mechanical calling and tried various shops and dealerships in different communities in Manitoba.
Alex had met some friends in and around Regina, Saskatchewan on some family trips so he decided to move there to work. The economy was low and a lot of people at that time were without work but Alex received five job offers all at the same time.
He worked for a while in the mechanical trade; going to school in Moose Jaw and Saskatoon to obtain his journeyman certificates in Automotive and Diesel mechanics.
He also worked on community pastures in SK. Riding his horse; rounding up cattle; enjoying nature and even fencing!
Then, he decided he would like to be a mechanics instructor so went back to Red River College for the two year Industrial Arts teaching training program. He never looked back! He taught in Winnipeg and Estevan, Saskatchewan, teaching welding, autobody, auto and farm machinery mechanics. He continued to ply his skill doing ranching work in the summers.
At the young age of 12, he heard the good news that Jesus Christ had died for his sins and Alex repented of his sin and accepted Him as his personal Lord and Saviour at a gospel meeting near Regina. He sought to honour and serve the Lord the remainder of his life.
While attending a Christian fellowship in Regina, he met Velma Light and they were married September 20, 1975. After a year of working for Blakeley (John Deere) which he said was his dream job, they moved to Estevan SK where Alex taught shop classes for two years. Their son, Andrew was born during this time in April, 1977.
The hills of LaRiviere were calling him again and they moved to Uncle Ambie’s yard at the top of the east hill in 1978. He helped his dad and brothers on the farm and then spent a month in winter 1978 fixing equipment for a friend who worked on an isolated sheep ranch on the Aleutian Islands.
Trevor was born in April, 1979 and Alex returned to teaching when he was offered a job at Garden Valley Collegiate in Winkler, MB that fall. He spent 22 years there; facing the challenges of teaching high school “wannabe” mechanics in automotive repair and welding. He had incredible patience and many of “his shop boys” went on to work in the area and became friends until the day of his death.
Julieanne (Julie) joined the family in October, 1981. Alex taught his three children real work ethics. Because he suffered a lot with back pain, the children learned to pick up the slack; doing the chores and learning responsibility in hard work. The Bible, prayer and music were also taught and that was the most important part of their family life together. The family were able to take many trips, visiting family and friends.
After retiring from teaching at GVC in June, 2000, Alex tried his skill as a business owner, selling and installing wind and solar systems on remote fishing and Bible camps, pastures, and off-grid homes. This became almost too much for him so he resorted to substitute teaching in many schools. He went to the Northwest Territories and taught in five different locations, including Fort Simpson, Hay River, Tulita and Inuvik. He made many friends in all these places. He had a special fondness for children, and they for him.
Alex and Velma started a family ministry in 1993 based on Biblical creation which became a very important part of their lives, attending summer fairs, homeschooling conferences and other events. He loved people and conversing with them; sharing his faith and love for the Lord Jesus Christ everywhere he went.
The family entertained many family and friends, including missionaries and other believers over the years and were blessed by everyone that crossed over their threshold.
Alex worked hard, carving a home for his family on the edge of the valley. One man on a bulldozer accomplished his dream of a home overlooking the valley he loved so much. When grandchildren joined the family, Grandpa loved them all immensely; trying to spend time with them and teaching them about the love of Jesus while laughing and horsing around! He left a rich legacy in them as well.
Before his cancer diagnosis in early March, 2024, he was a substitute teacher in the shop at MacGregor Collegiate, MacGregor, MB. He loved it and drove every school day through the winter months, even when school had been cancelled due to inclement roads and weather!
On March 6, 2024, Alex was diagnosed with Stage 4 advanced cancer metastasized to his liver and lungs. He fought hard to beat it, trying different diets and therapies but he was unable to do that and he received his promotion to the glorious presence of his Lord and Saviour in the early morning hours of June 1. With the help of the cancer and palliative care teams, he was able to stay at home.
He is survived by his loving wife, Velma; and his loving children and grandchildren. Andrew (Jaime), Liam and Elijah
Trevor (Heather), Lorelei, Tell, Ira, Emmy and Norah
Julie and her husband Marlin Schmidt
His brothers Norman (Jean) and Jack Scharf
Many nieces, nephews, cousins, and lots of friends
When asked about his funeral, Alex’s response was the same: “talk about the Cross”.
He is now at Home in heaven. Safe Home. He will always be loved; fondly remembered and sorely missed.
