Albert Douglas Simms, Simms Settlement
1939 – 2024
With his loving wife, Diana, of 58 years by his side, Albert Simms passed away peacefully on May 18, 2024, at the age of 85 at Shoreham Village long-term care facility.
Born in Simms Settlement on March 2, 1939, Albert was the son of the late Earl and Vivian (Jollimore) Simms. In addition to his parents, Albert was predeceased by sisters Julie (Arthur) Dauphinee, Carol, Ruth, and Mary; brothers Malcolm (Kay), Welsley (Lois), George, Gordon, Ronnie, John, Ruben, Edward, and Stanley; sisters-in-law Kay Simms, Lois Simms, and Linda Borque; and brothers-in-law Arthur Dauphinee, Kenny Nelson and Bob Borque.
Albert is survived by his wife Diana (Briand) Simms, loving sons Scott Simms (Michelle Proctor-Simms) and Dan Simms, and loving grandchildren Matthew Simms and Claire Simms. He is also survived by brothers-in-law Terry Pelrine and Brett Wilson; and sisters-in-law Doris Simms, Jean Simms, Theresa Pelrine, Cathy Nelson, and Shelley Wilson. He also leaves behind 12 nephews and 13 nieces, and several great-nieces and nephews.
Albert worked at the Chronicle Herald for 34 years as a press operator, retiring at the age of 55. He had lots of hobbies including fishing, hunting, gardening, and travel with his wife Diana. His love of nature, wildlife, and scenery took Albert and Diana on multiple trips to Newfoundland, the United States, and across Canada. He had a special place in his heart for Alaska. His love of the woods and fishing took him to several of his favorite lakes including Fox Point, Timber, Panuke, and Big St. Margaret’s Bay Lakes to fish for trout, sometimes with Diana or his sons, and other times with friends or other family members.
Albert was a hard worker all his life. He built the home he shared with his wife and sons, and, harvested, cut, and split his own firewood until he was 80 years old. He was a part-time land developer building roads and selling lots. He was also a part-time commercial fisherman taking family and friends in St. Margaret’s Bay to catch haddock, halibut, and mackerel. He took up and enjoyed golf after he retired until his body wouldn’t let him. Albert, with Diana by his side, enjoyed socializing with friends and family and living an honest life. He will be dearly missed.
A celebration of Albert’s life will be held at Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home on June 4, 2024, at 11 a.m. with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or NS Alzheimer’s Society.
