Alan Philip Forsdick passed away peacefully in hospital on August 13, 2024, at the age of 86, with his family by his side.
Alan was born in 1935 in Croydon, England, to parents Alice and George Forsdick. Alan had one sibling, an older brother, George.
Alan was one year old when the Second World War began and so he had many childhood memories of navigating war times, including his family home being severely damaged from a bomb that landed across the street from his house. As a boy, Alan didn’t care much for school and would have rather been out playing with friends or roaming about. Alan suffered a severe illness as a child which kept him away from school for 2 years. He left school at age 15 and got a job as a bicycle messenger. In his adolescent years, Alan spent a lot of time playing music, (the drums), in jazz clubs and fostered a lifelong love of music. At age 20, Alan began serving in the Royal Army Dental Corps Reserves and was stationed in Malaya for 2 years. Following his release from the Army, Alan started playing in bands on cruise ships and enjoyed travelling to many ports all over the world over the next few years.
In 1963, while still working on the cruise ships, Alan met his future wife, Darlene, who was travelling abroad with a friend after finishing high school. The two returned to Canada (Summerland, BC) in 1965 to be married and then settled back in England, welcoming the birth of their son, Doug, in 1967. In 1968 the couple returned to Summerland, where they bought and ran a grocery store and ice cream shop. In 1970 they welcomed their second child, Cheryl.
Alan held various jobs and positions over the years, but especially enjoyed the time he spent in the tourism industry as well as promoting local festivals.
Alan retired in 2003 and enjoyed spending his retirement years, along with Darlene, as snowbirds in Arizona as well as travelling locally and abroad. Alan also enjoyed volunteering in a literacy program at a local school for many years.
In his later years, Alan looked forward to visits from family and welcoming grandchildren and great grandchildren into his world. He developed a green thumb and relished the time spent in his garden, as well as attending local hockey games and music concerts.
Alan, (Papa), will be remembered fondly by his granddaughters for his love of desserts, his days being centered around mealtime, his ability to fall asleep on demand and his need to be early, (really early!), for everything! And for his quirky sense of humor and quick wit, and his vast knowledge of very random facts!
Alan is predeceased by his parents, Alice and George Forsdick, older brother George (Shirley) Forsdick, and nephew in law, Richard Tyler, all of England.
Alan leaves behind; his wife, Darlene Forsdick (nee Campbell), of 59 years, son Doug (Anita) Forsdick, daughter Cheryl (David) Heynen, granddaughters Leah (Corey) Crooks, Ateya Forsdick (Jacob Logan) and their mother Kim Forsdick, Ciara (David) Kendall, Ashley Heynen and great grandchildren Connor Crooks and Barrett Logan. Alan also leaves behind nieces, Susan Tyler and Linda (Simon) Hart, of England as well as cousin Jan Ferreira of Langley, BC.
His family will be forever grateful for the compassionate care he received from the Doctors, Nurses and staff at PRH.
A family and friends gathering will be held at a later date.
