It is with great sadness we announce the
peaceful passing of Alan Joseph Melanson,
age 74, of Amherst, NS. Alan passed away on Tuesday November
19, 2024 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre with family
members by his side.
Born in Amherst, NS, he was the son of
the late Emile and Dorilla (Dot) Melanson.
Alan was our big brother, small in
stature but he had a big heart and cared deeply for
others. He was friendly to everyone and always
greeted you with a smile. He enjoyed bowling,
soccer, floor hockey and his favourite team the Montreal
Canadiens.
Alan attended the NS training school in
Truro when he was a young boy. He had many great
experiences in the summer at Camp Tidnish. Alan was
a proud Special Olympian, competing in many sports for over 50
years.
He was a faithful member of Holy Family
Church of All Saints Parish, having served on the Altar for over 25
years.
He will be dearly missed by sisters
Diane (Kenneth) Bangerter, Freelton, ON, Shirley (Gregory) LeBlanc,
Amherst, NS, Debbie Lohr, Victoria BC, Charlene (David) Burden,
Bright’s Grove, ON, Monique (Donald) White, Lower Sackville
NS; brother, Stephen (Elaine), Lower Sackville,
NS.
He was the beloved Uncle Al to Jason
(Stacey), Tim (Tatyana), Joel (Angela), Derek (Michelle), Christina,
Christa, Kimberlea (Jean Denis), Thea (Bryan), Jeff (Chelsea), Tracy
(Kevin), Aaron (Aleshia), Nicholas, Matthew, Emily, Alicia (Marty),
Joey (Robin), Julie (Russell), David (Kristin), Mason, Olivia and
Hunter. Great-Uncle to Darina, Evan, Sebastian, Christian,
Arianne, Chloe, Megan, Taylor, Dylan, Jared, Alice, Freya, Gray,
Emersyn, Noah, Ethan, Ahmi, Elizabeth and
Kelso.
He always looked forward to the summer
with family and spending time at the family cottage. He will
be greatly missed by his Aunt Viola Corbett, Amherst, NS and loved by
many cousins. He will be remembered by the staff
and residents of Rupert House as well as the Bridge Adult Service
Centre and his very special friend Mary Ann Belliveau.
He was predeceased by his
parents Emile & Dorilla, infant brother Emile Jr. and
brother-in-law Leslie Lohr.
Arrangements are under the care and
direction of Jones Family Funeral
Centre, 70 Church St., Amherst,
NS(902-667-8777) from where visitation will be held on Thursday
November 28th from 6 to 8 pm. On Friday November 29 at 11am,
Funeral Mass will be celebrated from Holy Family Church of All Saints
Parish. Burial will take place beside his parents in the St.
Charles-Nativity Cemetery, Amherst, NS in the spring.
Should friends desire, memorial
contributions may be made to Special Olympics Nova Scotia, the Society
of St. Vincent de Paul, or the Bridge Adult Service
Centre.
