It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Alan George Thorne at his home in Cochrane, AB on May 8th, 2024.
Alan was born in Vancouver BC on May 2nd, 1960. After the passing of his father, the family moved to Calgary to be closer to his grandparents Walter & Amelia DOWNES.
Alan graduated from Crescent Heights High School and pursued a career in policing. He was originally hired as a civilian employee by the Calgary Police Service and later as a sworn member in November of 1981. Alan enjoyed a 35-year career with the Calgary Police, retiring in 2016. During his career Alan worked in many areas, loved every day of his career and the people he worked with.
Alan was pre deceased by his father, Thomas George in 1963, and his mother Muriel Elizabeth in 2012.
Alan is survived by his wife, Margaret HART, his daughter Alisha “A.J.” BLACKLEY (Tanner), grandchildren Cassidy & Lane, step daughters Casey SCHMIDT (Gordon), Melissa (SNIDER), step grandchildren Breanne, Nicholas, Olivia, Morgan & Ryan. Al is also survived by his brother Walter James (Trish), sister Alix MacDONALD (Marten HANSEN), niece Erin PEREIRA (Tassilo), nephew Tyler THORNE (Erin), nephew Haakon HANSEN (Joanna), niece Nyssa HANSEN, great nieces Keira, Mollie, Olivia, Alessia, Maria and great nephews Wyatt & Elias.
Al & Marg built a home in Cochrane in 1997 where they continued to live after retirement. They spent numerous hours looking after their large yard and always enjoyed having family and friends over for various celebrations. They travelled extensively, preferring Mexico and in 2022 Al, Marg, Jim and Trish travelled to Tuktoyaktuk with their trucks and trailers managing to achieve Marg’s dream of being there during the summer solstice, experiencing 24 hours of daylight, and standing in the Artic Ocean. They also enjoyed numerous camping trips & vacations together.
Alan and Marg were true soul mates, loved their family and friends, and were regular attendees at Calgary Police Veterans lunches every month.
For those interested in attending, there will be a viewing with family on Tuesday May 14th, 2024 at Cochrane Country Funeral Home, #6-402 Railway Street in Cochrane.
A Celebration of Life for Alan will be held on June 7th, 2024 at the Cochrane Lions Event Centre, 109-5TH Avenue in Cochrane from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. All family, friends and former work colleagues of both Al & Marg are invited to come and remember Al, tell a few stories and have a few laughs remembering a true friend and brother that will be sadly missed. He was one of a kind!
