Obituary
At age 99, this amazing WWII Veteran, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away peacefully at Roseway Hospital, Shelburne, NS.
Born in Halifax, and raised in the beautiful Annapolis Valley, he was the son of the late Arthur and Louisa (Nickerson) Stocker.
Dad proudly served his country with the RCAF as a wireless air gunner during the second world war, followed by a progressive 35 year career with Transport Canada as an electronic specialist in both Loran A and C navigational systems.
During the early career years, while employed at the Baccaro Loran station, mother and dad bought the family home in Port LaTour. As dad progressed in his career accepting transfers to other parts of the province, the home was rented and upon retirement he and our mother returned to the family home. They enjoyed many years of gardening, yielding large harvests that were shared with family, friends, and the community. Our mother took on the task of pickling and preserving many vegetables, and other vegetables were frozen for winter consumption.
Dad was very resourceful and enjoyed many other hobbies, including flying remote-controlled drones, which was a favourite pastime even in the last few months of his life. As a long time licensed Amateur Ham Radio operator Dad was an active participant in the local Ham Radio Club.
Dad’s sense of humour, positive attitude, and story telling captured the hearts of those fortunate enough to be in his presence and witnessed by many in the community during the recent wildfire evacuation center at the Barrington Arena. Dad loved life, nature, family, and the many canine companions he cherished throughout his lifetime.
Dad was looking forward to his 100th birthday but sadly he was a few months short of his goal.
He is survived by his children, Matthew (Kathy) Stocker, Middleton; Nancy (Michael) Lange, Rockhill, SC; and Christine (David) Dean, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Kimberley, Kurt, and Jason; great grandchildren, Wyatt, Sienna, Charlotte, and Paige. He is predeceased by his loving wife, Kathleen, and sisters, Grace Morash and Marie Stirling.
The family wishes to thank local friends and caregivers who supported Dad during the Barrington wildfire evacuation at the Arena. As well, thank you to the Roseway Hospital staff and nurses for their encouragement, care and compassion ensuring Dad’s last days were comfortable.
In Dad’s memory, donations would be appreciated to the Barrington Volunteer Fire Department, or to the Roseway Hospital Foundation.
Cremation has taken place under the direction and care of H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Barrington. A private burial will take place at a later date at the Brass Hill Cemetery.
