In Celebration of
Rose (Rosina) Cosolo (nee Doreto)
October 12, 1933 –
April 2, 2023
It is with profound sadness and heartbreak that we announce the passing of our mother, Rose (Rosina) Cosolo nee Doreto on Sunday, April 2, 2023 at the age of 89. Beloved wife of Bruno for 60 years. Loving mother of Andrew (Michie) and Lucy. Devoted None to Julia and Anastasia.
Rose was born in Rivotta Italy (Province of Udine, Region of Friuli) in 1933. She was the youngest daughter in a family of four. She had an older sister Antonietta (Nine) and two brothers, Rino and Erminio (Il Neri). Her parents were Giovanni and Albina (Zeze). Her 4 cousins lived across the road and were of similar ages and they were a big happy family. Also living with them was her father’s brother Valentino (Tin) and sister Rachela, and her grandparents.
During the depression and WWII there was a lot of poverty in Friuli. Fortunately her father and an uncle who lived with them had a steady job as station master of the tram railway between San Daniele and Udine. Her house was steps away from the station and everyone from the nearby town would pass by if they were going to work in Udine. In later years she would travel on this tram as would Bruno, her future husband. One of her chores was to fetch water from the canal with buckets as they had no running water in the village.
Her family was very devout and lived Christ’s words of love and charity. They often gave food to poor people who came down from the mountains and were selling wooden goods in town. Her family also shared their small house for months with refugees from bombings in Genoa and Udine. This included her schoolteacher and the teacher’s mother. Because there were no factories in her small town, Rivotta was not a bombing target. Rose completed grade 5 and learned to sew with the nuns, which was typical for girls of the village. Boys would complete grade 5 and learn a trade with a craftsman, rather than getting paid their parents had to pay the craftsman.
Her family always had good relations with a factory owner who originally made slippers and later women’s undergarments. Rose’s mother had worked for him from home and now her sister was working at his new factory in Udine. At age 15 she went to work at the factory with her sister. She handled shipping and receiving as well as some sewing. She made many lifelong friends with the girls she worked with and they kept in touch into their 80s. She was very close with cousins, uncles and aunts and her own family and enjoyed picnics in the mountains with them and with her company.
In 1963 she met and married Bruno Cosolo. He was born in the neighbouring town of Rodeano Basso in 1926, moved to France as the age of 2 and returned to Rodeano Basso at the age of 14. They knew of each other in the late 40s but he moved to Canada in 1951.
In Canada she had a close friend from the factory, Franca, as well as one of her cousins, Maria. Bruno had his sister’s family and many cousins and they welcomed Rose into the family. Son Andrew was born in 1964 and daughter Lucy was born in 1966. In 1967 they moved from the Lansdowne and Davenport area . They bought a house in central Etobicoke where she lived until 2023. It was her favourite place. She created a large garden in the backyard and would garden it every year, digging it up by hand. As her family had a large garden and a few fields in Italy, she was very familiar with agriculture.
In addition to her and Bruno’s extended family in Toronto they made many friends in Toronto. Mostly people from Friuli. Family visits, picnics, holiday parties were enjoyed by all. Some of Rose’s friends had small farms or houses in the country and Rose enjoyed visiting them and helping them with any chores they had.
When Rose married she had never cooked before as her aunt did all the cooking in the home when she was single. This was common for all the newlywed ladies in her circle. She learned to cook from books and her relatives and became an excellent cook. Her lasagna was legendary and was unmatched in any fine restaurant. She put a lot of love and attention to detail in everything she did. She sewed clothes for herself and her children and enjoyed sewing, knitting needlepoint and crochet. She was also passionate about sewing clothes for children in Haiti.
In the 70s and 80s she was able to travel back to Italy to spend time with her family which she loved so much. As her mother- in-law and her mother became older they needed more help. So Rose and Bruno would spend 3 months in Italy separately each year to take care of Bruno’s mother, whose children were both in Toronto. Rose’s mother had 3 children still in Italy who took care of her but Rose visited as much as she could.
Once Bruno retired they were able to go together and stay at the family home he inherited. They enjoyed visiting friends and relatives and being tourists in their homeland. In North America they visited Washington DC and Quebec City with a Famee Furlane tour group. And went to BC with Andrew, his wife Michie and her parents from Japan.
In 1998, her granddaughter Julia was born to Andrew and Michie. A second granddaughter Anastasia was born in 2010 to Lucy. Rose loved spending time with her girls and delighted in family gatherings and visits.
In later years Rose’s health started to decline and she had to stop many of the activities that she loved but right until the end she enjoyed watching cooking shows, listening to Italian music from the 1950s and listening to the rosary being prayed in Italian.
Visitation will talk place at the Turner & Porter Butler Chapel, 4933 Dundas St. W., Etobicoke (between Kipling & Islington Aves.) on Tuesday, April 11 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 pm. Funeral Mass will be held at Nativity of Our Lord, 480 Rathburn Rd., Etobicoke, on Wednesday April 12, 2023 at 11 a.m. Interment at Prospect Cemetery.
