Obituary of Abe Wiebe
February 20, 1932 – March 28, 2023
Abe Wiebe beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather of Calgary, AB, passed away on Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at the age of 91 years.
Abe was born on 20 Feb 1932 to Abrahm and Mary Wiebe in Rat River Settlement, Manitoba. Early in his childhood, the family moved to Langley, British Columbia where they farmed. Abe left the farm at age 18 and moved to southern Alberta with all of his belongings in a leather suitcase and $5 in his pocket. After trying his hand at a few odd jobs he was eventually employed by the Alberta Wheat Pool where he worked at various grain elevators throughout southern Alberta. During this time, he met and married Doreen Hobbs and started a family. He was transferred to northern Alberta by the Wheat Pool and was based in Beaverlodge for many years and then later transferred to Stony Plain where he retired from the Wheat Pool after 38 years. After the untimely death of Doreen, he met and married Shirley Quennell. They lived in Spruce Grove for several years and then moved to Cochrane Alberta and finally to Calgary.
Abe loved life and the great outdoors. He was a real people person who could always engage in quick conversation and easily make new friends. He was the king of one liners and a quick joke leaving smiles on the faces of all those he came across. He loved his family and friends and his beloved cabin on the Wapiti River which he built in the early 70’s. Motorcycles were his passion whether it was a dirt bike in the mountains or his Harley Davidson on the open road. Camping in the mountains with Shirley by a good fire and time spent with family and friends at the cabin always put a bright smile on his face. His positive outlook on life was an inspiration to all who knew him. He was a fine human being who made an impression on everyone he met. He led by example and taught us all so much. He will be deeply missed.
Abe is survived by his second wife Shirley; sons, Byron Wiebe (Patti) and Dave Wiebe (Kristin); stepsons Darrel Quennell (Emelie), and Gerod Quennell (Shelly); grandchildren Courtney Wiebe, Wyatt Wiebe, Katie Florendo (Joseph), Cory Mitchell, Travis Quennell (Samantha), Angie Quennell (Andy), Ethan Quennell, Madeline Quennell, Jenna Bobyn, Judi Bobyn, Jill Bobyn; and great-grandchildren Maliyah, Ayva, Zahra, Izaiah, Charlotte, Penelope, and Charlie. He will also be remembered by numerous nieces and nephews.
Abe was predeceased by his parents Abrahm and Mary; his first wife Doreen; and sisters Mary McNaught and Katie Downs.
The family wish to thank the staff at Evanston Grande Village who cared for him during the last years of his life and the staff at Peter Lougheed Hospital for care in his final days.
A Private family service will be held. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
