Gordon graduated from Ontario Mennonite Bible Institute in 1957 and was ordained a minister in the Mennonite Church, at Berea Mennonite Church, Alma, Ontario in 1955 where he served until 1967. He went on to pastor at Mannheim Mennonite Church, Blenheim Mennonite Church, Nith Valley Mennonite Church, and Tavistock Mennonite Church.
From 1988 to 1990 Gordon and Erma served as volunteers with Mennonite Central Committee in Courtenay, BC. Gordon then served in several short-term interim pastorates at Brussels Mennonite Fellowship; New Dundee United Brethren in Christ Church; and Steinmann Mennonite Church, Baden, retiring in 1994 in Tavistock where he and Erma operated Hendershot House Bed and Breakfast. Gordon and Erma were also avid campers which allowed them and their children and grandchildren to take in much of the natural beauty of Canada and the U.S.
In addition to his pastoral work Gordon served the Mennonite Church through his participation in many committees and boards. He was an active volunteer in palliative care in Tavistock and area, supporting families during their times of losing a loved one. He also made time each winter for at least one curling league, and in the summer for regular rounds of golf at the Tavistock Golf Course. As our community learned of his death, we consistently hear how widely Gordon was well loved and respected as a kind and gentle man who lived his Christian faith.
Visitation is planned at the Tavistock Mennonite Church on Friday, March 31, 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm with a family graveside committal service at 2 pm on Saturday, April 1. Funeral service to follow at Tavistock Mennonite Church at 3 pm, with Pastor Jim Brown officiating. The funeral will be livestreamed on www.tavistockmennonitechurch.ca/ at Watch the Service.
The family wishes to thank the staff on third floor of Nithview Home for their tireless care.
In lieu of flowers, Gordon has requested memorial gifts to Mennonite Central Committee which may be made through the Francis Funeral Home by calling 519-655-2431.
