HORVATH, Katalin (‘Kathy’) (nee Ecker) (November 25, 1932 – March 26, 2023)
The Horvath family announces the peaceful passing of our dearly loved mother, mother-in-law, grandma, sister, and aunt, Katalin (‘Kathy’) (Ecker), in the comfort of her family, at Maple Manor Long Term Care Facility, on Sunday, March 26, 2023, at the age of 90.
One of eight siblings, Katalin was born in Peresznye, Hungary. Her childhood memories were idyllic until foreign forces occupied Hungary, took property, and separated families. She lost two of her brothers to the 1956 Uprising. To escape persecution, she, and her sister Paula, crossed the Atlantic. The journey was cold, lonely, and frightening. In Canada she joined her sister Agnes. Though she had lost everything – possessions, friends, and family – what no regime was able to take from her was her faith and spirit. She was our bridge over troubled waters.
Soon after arriving in Canada, she met Andras Horvath (late, July 22, 1996) who would become her husband and the love of her life. Their devotion was as deep as it was complete, and as consistent as their morning coffee on the veranda. Katalin dedicated her life to Andras and to her two sons, Andy and Steve. Her purpose in life was family and giving to others. She had an endless love for children. To her last days she held a child’s twinkle in her own eyes. It was her pleasure to volunteer serving breakfast to school children who needed a helping hand. She took immense joy in her grandchildren, Jennifer, Mandy, Aidan, and Ryan.
Katalin was a member of St. Mary’s R.C. Church, Tillsonburg, where she volunteered and was a longtime member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Women’s League. She was devoted to serving her church and her community.
Katalin loved to garden. As she did with those around her, she gave life and light where there was none before. She nurtured and cared. She loved to cook and to bake. Every meal, every pastry, every birthday cake had love as the essential ingredient. She loved birds – bright red cardinals were a favourite. She took immense joy in chocolate and roasted chestnuts. If she ever sat still, it was to knit blankets that continue to spread her warmth. She spoke five languages, merging all of them into one unique dialect when speaking with her two sisters, Agnes and Paula.
Lovingly remembered by her sons and their families: Andy (Kelly) Horvath, of Tillsonburg and their daughters Jennifer (Michael) and Mandy; and Steve (Katherine) Horvath, of Stittsville and their sons Aidan and Ryan. Also survived by her sister Paula Ferenczy, of Windsor, as well as by nieces, nephews, and cousins. Predeceased by her siblings Agnes Stephan, and Leslie, Martin, Paul, Stephen, and Frank Ecker.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend a public visitation on Friday, March 31, 2023, between 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., in the Maurice J. Verhoeve Funeral Homes- Burial and Cremation Services Inc. Chapel, 262 Broadway, Tillsonburg. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12:00 noon in St. Mary’s R.C. Church, 51 Venison St. W. Tillsonburg, by Rev. Fr. Seejo John. Burial follows in the Tillsonburg Cemetery. Please join the family for a Catholic Women’s League Luncheon in the St. Mary’s Church basement hall afterwards. On Katalin’s online tribute page at www.verhoevefuneralhomes.com relatives and friends are invited to share their favourite photos, memories, and condolences.
