Dina’s Obituary
Geraldina “Dina” Cornelia Dickson, 66, slipped away peacefully on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at home in Lawrencetown, Halifax Regional Municipality. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Teunis “Teun” and Cornelia “Corrie” Noordermeer.
Dina had an infectious smile that could brighten your day, an embrace that would warm your soul. She loved all things natural, woods, rivers, fields and seasides, horses and bareback riding, children and laughter. And Star Trek. She was passionate about art in all its styles. Educated through an art program of the High School of Commerce in Ottawa, she practiced as a graphic artist in Halifax. Much of her work was described as photographic. All her work was described as beautiful.
In the Annapolis Valley, along with her art, Dina took a position in day care where she was delighted to engage with children, meet and befriend their parents and assist her coworkers.
She adored children, married, and added “loving wife and mother” to her artistic talent and after a time was instrumental in the formation of the Maritime Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Association (MCCCA) support group, associated with the international foundation. Dina coordinated the group’s membership and provided compassionate support to families in crisis. She helped build a library of childhood cancer information at the IWK Hospital and represented the MCCCA at childhood cancer conferences in Alberta and Washington DC. She gave engaging talks to charity-funding organizations and assisted with the organization of Halifax’s first international childhood cancer conference.
Working at Classics, and then W.H. Smith Books, Dina transitioned to the management of independent Frog Hollow Books where she met, coordinated with, and ordered from various national publishers and their representatives. She loved engaging with the many authors and their agents, but her greatest delight was meeting, talking with and befriending her many customers, for whom she could always recommend the perfect book. Always with her captivating smile.
Dina is survived by her husband Harold “Scott”; sister Dorothy Jane Hall (Windsor, N.S.); nephews Adrian and Taylor Hall (both of Ottawa). Besides her parents, Dina was predeceased by her son, Aaron Scott and her brother, Edward Joost.
There will be a graveside funeral service 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 9, 2023, in North Kingston Cemetery, Rev. David Watt officiating. Donations in memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia, North Wood Foundation, or the Canadian Red Cross. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home, 389 Main Street, 1-855-825-3448. Online guestbook may be signed by visiting: www.middletonfuneralhome.com
