It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear friend Ardith Mary Trevors, on December 13, 2024 with friends at her side, at the Golden Links Lodge. Due to her rapid decline in health, unable to care for herself, she’d resided at Golden Links Lodge since October 15th 2024.
Ardith was born on March 14, 1948 in Bathurst New Brunswick. Being the eldest child, she leaves behind her siblings; Clinton, Glenna, Bruce (Pam), Billy (Connie) and Malcolm (Cindy), as well as nephews and nieces, all of whom reside in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. She was predeceased by her parents, Henry Trevors and Hazel (née Wood) Trevors.
Following several moves in her first ten years, the Trevors family established roots in Douglasfield, New Brunswick, close to extended family members.
In the fall of 1961, at the age of 13, Ardith was diagnosed with polio. Following the required back surgery she recuperated at home, confined to bedrest for nine months in a body cast, followed by three months in a walking cast, resulted in her repeating a school year.
She was raised within the Anglican faith, attended Bible classes, taught Sunday school, and was a member of the Girls Auxiliary for several years. Her faith quietly guided and carried her through a challenging life with the aftermath of polio.
June 1967, after graduating from Harkins High School, Newcastle New Brunswick, Ardith worked at Sobey’s for a short while.
In 1968, Ardith moved to Moncton for the RNA training, (Registered Nurses Assistant), graduating in February 1969. She worked for ten years at the Moncton Hospital on the unit 5 Parlee. She had many fond memories of the staff and shared a close bond with the charge Nurse. She also treasured memories of the Watling family whom she often mentioned. Roy, Norma and Darlene, were very special to her, she enjoyed time at their cabin as well as time at Parlee Beach in Shediac, New Brunswick.
September 1978, Ardith relocated to Winnipeg, leaving her Atlantic home to reside in the prairies. She upgraded her RNA status to our Provincial LPN status. She worked at the St. Boniface Hospital from 1978 to 2003. After a short stint working on a medical unit, she joined the surgical team on 7AS. During her 15 years on surgery, lasting friendships were made through frequent staff parties, socials, weddings, showers, summer barbeques and Christmas parties, we relished any excuse for a gathering. When working with Ardith you could be sure of her initiating a few escapades that had you in stitches laughing, never a dull moment.
While still working full time, Ardith continued her education, completing a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University of Winnipeg, in May 1985.
In 1995 she left bedside nursing to become a Ward Clerk in the Dialysis unit. She expanded her repertoire of friends, nurses and doctors who valued her dedication to details, solid work ethics as well as her sense of humor.
In March 2003, after 25 years working at St. Boniface Hospital, Ardith bid her final farewell to her career. Surrounded by numerous friends from several departments, she was officially retired. Freedom.
She enjoyed life in Manitoba, but her heart never left her friends and family in the Maritimes. Over the years she would go home, rent a car in order to access all her favorite sites, visiting old friends, paying her respects at grave sites, visiting her siblings and their families. She’d return with stacks of pictures, frequently printing duplicates, just in case.
Ardith enjoyed travelling; in 1997-98 she spent Christmas in Hawaii with a friend Ruth, also visiting Newfoundland and St. Pierre in 1999 with Phila. She enjoyed spending time at the Cadieux Cottage in St. Laurent, by Lake Manitoba. She favored windy days, as she enjoyed the sensation of sand tingling against her skin, or in the evening, sitting on the beach taking pictures and enjoying the gorgeous sunsets.
Ardith had a unique way or taste in decorating her apartment. Firstly, Queen Elizabeth was guaranteed several spots on the wall, Ardith had us referring to her as Aunt Liz. Secondly, Anne Murray was displayed in numerous photos. Every album, cassette, CD, that Anne Murray ever published, Ardith owned it, some of those in duplicates. There were also many photos of the family, grandparents, herself as a child with her parents, the family cat, to name a few. Friends got to see her nephew, Jason, grow from a young lad to his grade 12 graduation. As a filler, Maxine was a favorite, Ardith enjoyed her sarcasm and direct puns. Dairy cows were a favorite when she first came to Manitoba, but eventually they lost their spot to Maxine.
Those who knew Ardith appreciated her honesty, her unwavering support, her desire to contribute in any way she could. Her well known mantra, “if you ask for my opinion, you better be ready to hear my response.”
Ardith left her mark on many people, whether it be friendships at work, bingo, St. John’s Haven, a CIBC bank teller, staff members at Golden Links, and the list is endless.
One group in particular feeling her loss, is the Beavers. A tight knit group of 9 nurses, originally from the 7th floor at St Boniface Hospital, whom have known each other for 3 decades and counting, supporting each other through difficult times as well as celebrating milestones. We are now a group of eight.
Ardith’s candor, wit, and humor will forever be missed.
A quote found amongst her pictures
There comes a point in your life when you realize:
Who Matters
Who Never Did
Who Won’t Anymore
And Who Always Will
So, don’t worry about people from your past.
There’s a reason why they didn’t make it to you future.
