Devoted spouse to Ian Douglas Cowie who pre-deceased her by twenty-six days, and eternal mother of Douglas Alexander Cowie and daughter-in-law JoAnne Patricia Cowie, Sheila Helen Milmine (nee Cowie) and son-in-law Peter Milmine, and Ian Shiach Cowie and daughter-in-law Xin (Angel) Jin-Cowie. Loving Grandmother of Jason Alexander Milmine, Michelle Victoria Macllquham (nee Milmine) and spouse Adam Macllquham, Cali Christopher Cowie, Ian Evan Cowie and spouse Hayley Nicole Cowie, Paul Diedrich Alexander Cowie, Kelsey Helen Hazel Cowie and spouse Elise Maureen Ann Thomas, Athreya Helen Jin-Cowie and Ocean Qi Jin-Cowie; blessed as the cherished Great-Grandmother of Hudson Ian Cowie, Ellie Astra Sheila Macllquham, Maxwell Kenneth Cowie, and Shea Peter Gordon Macllquham.
Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother – your love was boundless. You will be missed.
Raised in Dufftown, Scotland, Helen was a small-town girl with big dreams who graduated from Aberdeen University and entered the teaching profession in Scotland. Helen soon immigrated to Canada in 1958 with her husband and two children Douglas and Sheila, Ian was born in Canada, where she continued her teaching career. Helen retired from teaching as one of the few women of her time having attained the position of Vice Principal in York Region.
Helen Cowie was a well-respected teacher at Huron Heights in Newmarket before moving to a V.P. position in Richmond Hill.
Helen and Ian Cowie settled on a farm outside Newmarket in 1970 and moved “into town” forty-five years later; living in and contributing to the local community until their passing. Helen loved music and played piano with great enthusiasm. In her retirement, Helen volunteered with the local Food Bank, Crisis Line, and worked with an Aphasiac group. She revelled in modern technology and stayed current and connected until the end.
Helen and Ian travelled the world together several times. Not too bad for a small-town girl from Dufftown, mom!
She would want to say here, I believe, Aberdeen was the better University over Edinburgh.
