O’Brien, Douglas James… Jim.
Jim passed away at home on November 25 after an illness that was complicated by pneumonia. He was 91 years young.
Jim was born on September 19,1933 in Toronto, son of the late Lincoln and Lorena (née Cole). He married his High School sweetheart, Wilma Joan Milley, in 1956 and graduated from University of Toronto’s Faculty of Dentistry in 1957. They then moved to the village of Madoc, ON where Jim started his first dental practice. Two years later they relocated to Etobicoke, ON where his practice flourished.
Jim was a gentle, community-minded, servant-hearted soul. His aim in life was “to do something useful, to get busy on something worthwhile.” His life was dedicated to being of service to his community.
As a dentist, he aimed to relieve suffering, pain, and misery. As a Rotarian and Kiwanis President, his aim was to serve his community through volunteering. As someone with a zest for life, Jim with his wife Wilma were founders of the Beaver Valley Probus Club, with at the time over 400 members enriching their minds, bodies, and souls. He was also an active member of Grace United Church in Thornbury, ON.
A gifted and award-winning woodcarver, Jim taught and encouraged other artists in his home studio overlooking the fields and orchards of Clarksburg, ON. His remarkable talent can be seen in a carved rendition of Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’ behind the altar of All Saints Anglican Church in Collingwood, ON.
After Wilma’s passing in 2013, Jim was surprised to find joy again a few years later with a recently widowed Dianne Nixon, whom he had met in a Grief Support Group. They enjoyed their time together in Thornbury before making many new friends in their new home at Balmoral Seniors’ Residence in Collingwood when they moved there in 2021.
Jim is predeceased by his parents Lincoln and Lorena (née Cole); first wife Wilma; brothers-in-law David Milley and Bob Milley and sisters-in-law Renata Milley and Anne Milley.
From Jim’s first marriage, Jim is survived by children Laura (David), Daniel, Bill, Dave (Kelly); grandchildren Emily (Ben), Calvin (Natalie), Ella and Kayley; great-grandchildren Malcolm and Charlotte. He is also survived by brothers-in-law Fred Milley (Dorothy) and Ken Milley (Judy) and many loving nieces and nephews and their families. From Jim’s second marriage he is survived by his wife Dianne, her daughter Tracy, and Dianne’s granddaughters Janine and Anne.
He will be dearly missed by all.
