DUMONT – Laurent Joseph passed away on November 23, 2024, with his family at his side. Laurent enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Dad was happiest with a newborn baby to hold. Laurent was born on June 10, 1929, to Euclide and Alice Dumont (Labrie) in Ponteix and raised in Val Marie, Saskatchewan. Dad was the ninth child from a family of fifteen, seven sisters and seven brothers. He is survived by one brother, Michel, and four sisters: Margaret, RoseAlma, Louise and Jeanne. He married Lucille deMontigny from Ponteix on April 8, 1953, and they were married for 64 years when Lucille passed away. Survived by their children Clement and Debbie from Fort Macleod and their children David (Drake), Annette and Jeremy Klassen (Mackenzie) Christine and Rob Barr (Jesse, Lillian) and PJ and Ryan Cheyne, Jacqueline from Mexico (Chad and Farah Mclennan and Dean and Melissa Mclennan. Alice and Clark Moen from Swift Current, Heather and Trevor Elder (Rachel, Joshua, Levi, and Avah), Becky and Chris Matlashewski (Julian), Ashley and Tyler Wallin (Talon, Brynn, Robert), and Alan Dumont and Nikki Skuban Stadnyk from Creston.
As a young man, he worked as a logger in BC and also travelled around custom combining until his mother called him home to take over the farming. After many years of farming, they sold and moved to Stewart Valley, where he worked for the municipality as a grader operator. In 1977 they relocated to Swift Current and managed an apartment building and worked for the Swift Current RM. He was always proud to show us the roads he built. Dad loved to sing, and while on road trips, we sang old country tunes and even yodelling. He also sang in the church choir and with a Barber Shop Choir. A pleasant memory is the year he sang a solo in French at midnight mass in Val Marie. He spent many hours fishing with son-in-law Clark, huddled in their ice shack and drinking Hutterite wine, trying to stay warm. He also liked woodworking, remodeling two houses, building decks, cupboards, and a beautiful china cabinet. The grandchildren remember him calling them cutie patooties and tossing them in the air. They thought he was big and strong.
Dad was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He also enjoyed gardening, which he did right up until he was ninety. Dad didn’t need many material things: church on Sunday, food on the table and a comfy bed. Hockey was his passion, and you paid the price when you walked in front of the TV during hockey night in Canada. He was very knowledgeable about the Stock Market and often shared advice about saving for the future. His motto in life was, “If you work a job that you love you’ll never work a day of your life “
Dad lived out his last five years at the Meadows, receiving excellent, compassionate care from the staff. The staff told us he often sang with them.
