Lawrence Lloyd Smith Obituary
Our dad, Larry Smith, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family November 17th, 2024 at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital, Stephenville, Newfoundland.
Larry was born October 18th, 1939 in St. Anthony, the eldest child of Olive and Max Smith. Dad moved to Ramea in 1962 where he started his career with Transport Canada but most importantly where he met the love of his life, our beautiful mom. After a short adventure in PEI, they ended up in Stephenville where they laid down their roots. He spent 30 plus years at the Stephenville airport meeting lots of good people along the way.
Our father was a proud Newfoundlander through and through and no place in this world had ever compared. He had a passion for hunting, fishing, riding his quad and snowmobiling the Lewis Hills. He loved singing and playing his guitar with his friends who meant the world to him. For him, there was nothing like a drop of Old Sam and a scud attack to light up a party.
Hockey was a big part of his life. He had a fierce loyalty for the Montreal Canadiens and looked forward to badgering the unfortunate Leaf fans. He devoted his time to minor hockey back in the day but he truly loved his years as the coach of the Stephenville Jets and man, did he love those years.
Dad was funny and charming. He had a lethal handshake and the strongest hugs. He was tough but so kind. He had a presence that was larger than life and he always knew how to tell a good story.
Dad adored the family he and mom built with all of his heart. He has left behind: his wife, Evelyn, who stood by his side for better or worse, for 60 plus years; and their four children: Jeff (Amy), Greg (Cheryl), Tracey (Derek), and Tammy (Brian); and their beautiful grandchildren: Dylan, Lukas, Alexis, Allison, Erika, Kolten, Kasen, and Kate; and great grandbaby, Olivia May.
He is survived by: his brother Roy and his twin sisters Jean and Judy. He loved the three of them dearly and the memories they shared. He especially loved hearing the girls play the piano and organ. Dad is also survived by many in-laws, nieces and nephews, too many to name.
He is together again with his mom and dad, his nephew Greg, brother in law Roger, and great grand baby, Walker.
We know our father, husband, brother, uncle, friend is safe and happy now. He is in his glory telling stories and singing songs up above. We will miss him every day until we meet again.
Larry’s family wish to acknowledge and thank the staff of Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital for the loving and gentle care they offered to our father.
Following his wishes cremation has taken place. A visitation will take place on Thursday, November 21st from 7:00-9:00 PM at Russell’s Funeral Home, Stephenville. A celebration of Larry’s life will be held in Stephenville, Newfoundland in the summer of 2025. Date and details to be announced. As expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Larry’s memory to Canadian Diabetes Association.
