It is with immense sorrow, but grateful for a long life, well lived, that we announce the passing of our mother, Dolores Agnes Gallino-Breton (nee Joly), on Friday October 25th, 2024.
Dolores was born in Morgan Township, Chelmsford, Ontario, and her family moved to Timmins when she was 6 years old. There, she attended primary school and then at the age of 17, graduated from TH&VS; she worked at St. Mary’s hospital during her school days. She then worked at Lowry’s where she met our Dad, Mario. They married, raised three children and moved, coincidentally, back to Chelmsford.
Del worked as a bookkeeper for many years. In 1971, she studied for, and on her very first attempt, she passed the Ontario Securities Commission exam and received her license to trade. She became the first woman stockbroker in Sudbury and she was one of only two who were bilingual at the time. Our Mom was a trailblazer! She was efficient, competent, and was well respected by her clients and her peers.
Mom was an excellent seamstress, knitter, and crafter. She enjoyed curling, gardening and loved to read. She was an accomplished cook. And lucky for us, Mom learned how to cook Italian from our Nonna!
She taught us her skills and lovingly gave us encouragement, support and independence. Mom was so proud of her family. She was grateful to have travelled with and enjoyed her children’s company on many vacations and adventures. She was also grateful for her many good friends.
Dolores is survived by her three children: Donna Cusson (Rick) of Servos Twp, Rick Gallino of Timmins and Joanne Kirkwood (Michael) of Sudbury. She is also survived by her six grandchildren: Elizabeth Cusson (Ron Robillard), Michael Cusson (Michelle), Stephen Gallino (Nina), Jennifer Warden (Dave), Cara Kirkwood (Lee Webster) and Brandon Kirkwood. She was also very proud of her four great-grandchildren: Kaden Lafond, Gemma Gallino, Wyatt Kirkwood and Stella Warden.
Del is pre-deceased by her husband, friend and father of her children, Mario Gallino (2007) and by her second husband Louis Breton (2014).
Del was the second last child born in her family. She is pre-deceased by her father, Seraphim Joseph Alphred Joly and her mother, Regina Joly (Dubreuil). She is also pre-deceased by all of her brothers and sisters & their spouses: Laurent Joly (infant), Omer Joly (Hosanna) of Timmins, Laurette Burke (Peter) of Toronto, Cecile Letourneau (Joe) of Barrie, Ernest Joly (Jeanne) of Timmins, Therese Laporte (Eugene) of Timmins, Lilliane Lemay (Georges) of Toronto, Agnes Joly, (at age 3), Gracia Spadafore (Frank) of Guelph, Rene Joly (Marjorie) of Kamloops BC, and Edgar Joly, (infant). She is also predeceased by her brother-in-law, Archie Gallino of Timmins.
Our family wishes to thank all the PSWs/PCAs from Canadian Shield, Bayshore, along with the staff at Southwind Retirement and HSN, and St Joseph’s CCC, who have helped Dolores over several years.
We deeply appreciate the helping hands and hearts of all the staff at St. Joseph’s Villa in Sudbury, where Mom made new friends amongst her caregivers and other residents. Special thanks go out to Leya, Tara, Julia, Phil, Anju, Kapila, Shova, Jaya, Jackie, Denise, Nancy, Mary, Dianna, Michelle, Jamie-Lynn, Delna, Anne, Ara, Lola, Rhyah, Sarah, Sally, Ricci, Hannah, Anju & Jijo, Shelby, Lorna, Dawson, Lai, Dr. Moe, and to Dr. April Kindrat. We would also like to thank John, our Sunnyside Piano Man at St Jo’s, who so generously played music for our Mom and for his support & friendship.
In lieu of memorial flowers, Dolores requested to please consider a donation to the Sudbury-Manitoulin Alzheimer Society Daycare Program, St Joseph’s Villa or to a charity of your choice.
