The family announces, with sorrow, the sudden passing of Dino at the age of 85. Dino passed away at Thunder Bay Regional Hospital with family by his side.
Dino was born in Villa del Nevoso, Italy which today is known as Ilirska Bistrica, Slovenia. He grew up in Romano d’Ezzelino in Northern Italy where he trained to be a mason (brick layer). This skill certainly came in handy when he bricked the family home in Longlac, Ontario and helped several friends add basements to their homes. He immigrated from Italy to Longlac, Ontario in 1959 with his father Giovanni, brother Enio and sister Cesarina. He often talked about the journey by ship across the North Atlantic in the winter. He always said that everyone on the ship was sick except himself and one other man. He said he would never go on another ship because of the rough seas he experienced during that voyage. They travelled by train to Thunder Bay from Halifax Pier 21 – missing their stop in Longlac because they didn’t speak English and the conductor forgot to get them off the train. They ended up spending the night in the old Thunder Bay train station on the waterfront, taking a bus to Longlac. They arrived to a full-blown Canadian winter in January 1960.
Dino worked various jobs in bush camps – cutting and clearing trees, building roads and learning bush camp French and English. He would tell stories about how he could eat 16 eggs for breakfast in those days of hard work in the camps.
Dino met Louise after moving to Longlac. She was a friend of his sister Cesarina’s and was the girl across the street from his family home. They were married July 3,1965 and had 4 children: Jimmy in 1968, Lisa in 1969, Dina in 1971 and Paul in 1972.
He travelled home to Italy in 1976 to visit his Dad and sister who had returned to Italy in 1963. It was the first time Dino had returned home, and he was proud to show his homeland to his family. He enjoyed many family vacations and camping trips in the family motorhome, visiting his brother in the Sudbury area, and Niagara Falls. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed spending time driving down dirt roads and walking for miles in the bush. He loved hunting for and picking mushrooms in the fall, knowing exactly which ones were OK to eat.
In the late 1980’s Dino purchased a logging company, hauling wood to the Terrace Bay mill. This meant moving the family to Terrace Bay and starting a new life there. DLP Trucking Ltd was born. Dino was truly a jack of all trades. He did many of his own repairs on his haul trucks as well as many jobs around the house – plumbing, construction and electrical jobs. If he didn’t know how to do it, he would quickly learn and he enjoyed the satisfaction of learning new skills.
During Spring shut downs, he and Louise would travel to the Caribbean – visiting Mexico, Jamaica, Barbados, Cuba and the Dominican Republic. They travelled to Italy several times to visit family and even travelled to Nevada to visit Lisa and her husband Roger while they lived there. He enjoyed his visit to Virginia City where he rode in a stagecoach and visited the famous Bucket of Blood saloon. He visited Calgary while Dina lived there and managed to squeeze in some visits to his cousins in Lethbridge while there.
In his later years, as he endured several health challenges, he enjoyed many of his favourite classic western shows – especially movies starring John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Clint Eastwood and of course Bonanza. He loved Ice Road Truckers and other shows about trucks and trucking. He bought himself a mobility scooter and on days when the weather was perfect, he could be seen around town in Terrace Bay or driving out to visit the guys at the town garage or at his former DLP trucking garage.
Dino was a hardworking man, and his strong work ethic and words of wisdom are attributes that he instilled in his children. He came to Canada with very little and built a life for himself and for his family.
Dino was predeceased by: his son Jimmy in infancy, his mother Gemma, his father Giovanni, his stepmother Maria, his in-laws Marjorie and Lucien, special Zio and Zia Giacomo and Caterina, several other aunts, uncles and cousins in Canada and Italy, brothers in law David and Steve, sisters in law Alice and Adele, and nieces Kacie, Kallie and Tonja.
Dino is survived by his wife of 59 years, Louise, his children Lisa (Roger), Dina (Dave) and Paul. Also survived by his brother Enio (Diane), his sister Cesarina (Armando), brother-in-law Marcel Lussier, special friend Margaret Palmer, step grandchildren and step great grandchildren – Zack, Liz, Emery, Scottie and Walker, Taylor and Chantal, Tessa and Rod as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins in Canada and in Italy.
