URKOW: John Joseph
December 7, 1947 – October 3, 2024
John Joseph Urkow, aged 76 years of Watrous, SK passed away at Royal University Hospital Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on Thursday, October 3rd, 2024.
John was born on December 7, 1947 as the tenth child of Peter and Annie Urkow and grew up on the busy family farm near Daysland, Alberta. Upon graduating from high school, off to the city he went. Not only did he find employment with the City of Edmonton, he also found the love of his life, Mona, on a chilly night in November of 1974. Love blossomed and by October 1975, John and his new bride went back to Daysland to take over the family farm. In 1977 came the arrival of Jason, followed by Trevor in 1979, and finally Jennifer in 1980, making their family complete.
Not being one to sit and relax, John decided to start his oilfield company in 1989 and thus, “Konan John” was born. With hard work and determination, John built his company to be one of the most respected in the oil and gas industry. Eventually, work migrated west to Pigeon Lake, so in 1997 the decision was made to trade in country living for lake living.
John’s front yard was now a lake and offered endless opportunities for John to fish as much as his heart desired. Legend has it that in the quiet afternoons, when he would take the boat out on his own, some of the largest fish ended up on the end of John’s hook. Unfortunately, the mysterious waters of Pigeon Lake always malfunctioned his camera!
John’s love for his family was beyond measure, but really became full circle when his first and only grandson Ethan came along in 2003. Finally, there was someone new to teach how to fish! John truly loved being a Papa and getting to see the world all over again through Ethan’s eyes.
In 2007 he and Mona decided to try another adventure and started making Puerto Aventuras, Mexico their winter home. John fit in immediately, making friends that became family and he even quickly became the unofficial mayor of Puerto.
Deciding on a change in scenery, John and Mona decided to take their adventurous spirit to international levels and in honour of their 43rd wedding anniversary in 2018, spent a month touring through Italy and then sailing the shores of the Mediterranean.
2021 brought with it the decision to say goodbye to Mexico and start exploring other areas of the world. Together they explored many beautiful islands throughout the Caribbean, saw the splendour of Alaska, and just recently spent days discovering what the British Isles had to offer.
John had many loves in his life but none more important than his family. He was a generous man with a heart as big as the ocean. Quietly remarkable and uncommonly kind, he showed us all the importance of family and the value of hard work.
John is survived by his soulmate, Mona; children Jason (Bree), Trevor (Linay) and Jennifer; grandson Ethan; grandpups Sophie & Gemma. Siblings Alice (Del), Mary (Clarence), Margaret (Ben), Betty, Patricia (Gary), Sonia (Frank) and Peter (Sherri); brother and sister-in-law’s Marlene, Florence, Betty (Ron), Edith, Bing (Wendy), Glendon (Wendy), Ray (Louie), Lyndon (Marlene) George (Nancy), Jerry (Norma), Keith (Cindy), Shelley (Rick) and Daryl (Sharon); as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Peter and Annie Urkow; father and mother-in-law Harry and Helen Vanthuyne; brothers Nicholas Urkow, Bill Urkow, Mike Urkow, and Ted Urkow; sisters Olga Urkow, Doris Beauregard and Jean Watters; brother in laws Robbie Vanthuyne and Dennis Vanthuyne.
A celebration of John’s life will take place on November 9th, 2024 in Falun, Alberta.
