Mike Nicholas Koval was born December 21, 1935, in Creighton Mine, ON, to Mary Sobchyshyn and Nicholas Onfrey Koval, the oldest of four children. The family moved to Fishing Lake, SK, in 1941 to take up farming. At the age of 18, Mike had completed his schooling and went to work at the Falconbridge Nickel Smelter in Sudbury, ON. After getting homesick for Saskatchewan, Mike returned to the prairies, taking several different jobs working on the oil rigs, pipelines, and running big machinery for three years at the Hydro Dam in Squaw Rapids.
In 1962, Mike married Bernice Strembicki and four children soon followed: Louise in 1962, Linda in 1964, Karen in 1966, and Richard in 1967. During these years, Mike worked seven years at the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool in Otthon and McKim, two years at the Local Improvement District in Hudson Bay, and in 1976 became the administrator of the Weneeda Park Lodge in Wadena. He worked there until 1994 when Healthcare eliminated all the administrators and went under the district administration. It was at this time that Mike and Bernice decided to go farming on the family farm at Fishing Lake until 2011 when they decided to retire. Sadly, Mike was predeceased by Bernice in 2011.
Mike found joy in fishing, hunting, camping, and travelling. Mike and Bernice made Rincon de Guayabitos, Mexico, their winter home for 27 years. Mike’s keen desire to learn about cultures, geography and the history of every place he visited helped him and Bernice form many lasting friendships with the local residents as well as other Canadian Snowbirds.
Mike was happiest when his children and grandchildren came to visit him in Mexico, at the farm, and later in Melville. After moving to Melville in 2017, Mike’s trips to Mexico became shorter and fewer, and he travelled more within Canada visiting his family and Canadian Snowbird friends in their Canadian homes. He also became very involved with the activities at Heritage House, spending many hours enjoying coffee, barbecues, cribbage, canasta, bingo, monthly birthday suppers, building puzzles and going to garage sales every week. Oh, the stories he did tell about all of his adventures!
Mike passed away peacefully on September 26, 2024, at the age of 88. He leaves to mourn his passing: his children, Louise (Kelly) Koval, Linda Arnason, Karen (Al) Carter, and Richard (Laurie) Koval; his grandchildren, Brittany Arnason, Jordan (Carly) Arnason, Angela (Ivan) Carter, Steven Carter, Kevin Carter, Katelyn Koval, and Parker Koval; and his great-grandchildren, Danica Arnason, Teigan Arnason, and Nicholas Carter. He will be sorely missed by all his family, friends, and acquaintances!
