Obituary
Mercedes was born in St. John’s on October 28th, 1957. She passed peacefully at Extendicare Maple View, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at the age of 66. Mercedes was a beautiful person; she was intelligent, athletic and creative. She was an award-winning creator of original stained glass pieces. She was a talented, meticulous seamstress who readily shared her talent with family and friends. Mercedes was a versatile, natural athlete and a fierce competitor in both basketball and volleyball; she shared her volleyball skills as a youth coach in Alberta. She had an angelic soprano voice and sang in the Precious Blood Cathedral Choir in Sault Ste. Marie for more than 25 years and more recently, Holy Family Choir. Mercedes excelled at almost anything she decided to put her mind to – including the game of Scrabble. She played guitar and sang with Alfred, both church and favourite folk music at every opportunity.
Loving, cherished wife and best friend of Alfred. Wonderful, caring mother of Christopher (Kelly) Mercer, Benjamin (Christina Villeneuve) Mercer, Vincent (Holly Cunningham) Aquilina and Dominic (Christina Ajithkumar) Aquilina. Cherished grandmother of William Mercer; Cole, Samantha, Kate and Addison Mercer and Lyra Aquilina. Dear sister of Vince (Marina ton) McCarthy, Terry (Anthony) McLevey, Mary (Leonard) Mandville, Anna (McCarthy) Powell, Jamie (Kathryn Small) McCarthy, Joseph McCarthy, Agnes McCarthy, and Steven McCarthy. Sister-in-law of Pauline (Greg) Spencer. She will be missed by many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. Predeceased by members of the Aquilina and McCarthy families, especially her parents Vincent and Teresa McCarthy, brother Peter, and two infant siblings.
A private family celebration of life was held in Sault Ste. Marie. A funeral mass will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Outer Cove on Saturday, October 5th, 2024 at 1:00 pm. Interment to follow at the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Alzheimer Society of Sault Ste. Marie & Algoma District. “You will always be in our hearts.”
