James «Jim» Granquist Obituary
James “Jim” Granquist
November 8, 1938 – September 16, 2024 age 85.
It is with profound sadness and heartfelt remembrance that we announce the passing of Jim Granquist on Monday, September 16, 2024, at the age of 85. A loving father, devoted grandfather, and cherished friend, Jim leaves behind a legacy of warmth and kindness that will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Jim was predeceased by his beloved parents, John and Signe Granquist, as well as his siblings—Jean (Vern) Thompson, Betty (Bill) Troughton, Beatrice (Reg) Fredrickson, Robert Granquist, Lois Watson, Billy Granquist, Jack Granquist, brother-in-law Melvin Dixon, and Diane Granquist, the mother of his children. He is survived by his loving children: Caroline Granquist, Sharon (Jason) Hauser, Jason Granquist, Kevin Granquist, Karen (Kevin) Spilchak, Dana (Dave Seamer) Granquist, and Jolene Granquist, along with his adored grandchildren: Kirstin, Brandon, Jamie, Damian, Casey, Lantana, Atticus, and Beau.
Jim’s spirit is also carried on by his sister Ruby Dixon, who passed away five days after Jim, brother Garett (Carole) Granquist, sisters-in-law Joan and Eleanor Granquist, brother-in-law David Watson, and countless nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbours whose lives he touched in so many meaningful ways.
Born and raised on a farm in the Willowbrook area, Jim’s early years were filled with love, laughter, and the joys of country life. He often shared fond stories of riding horses, walking to Look Out School, and the treasured moments spent with his siblings. Jim’s passion for farming blossomed at a young age as he helped on the family farm and formed a special bond with his Uncle Carl Granquist.
In Grade eight, he accepted a position as a flag person with the Department of Highways. Eventually, he returned to his roots, taking over the family farm in Willowbrook, where he raised his family. Amid the demands of farm life, Jim made time to support his kids in their many pursuits, from 4-H projects and horse shows to hockey games and curling matches. Jim loved playing cards and never turned down a coffee with a neighbour. He loved all animals, but horses and cats held a special place in his heart.
In his later years, Jim moved to Abernethy, where he forged a special connection with a remarkable farm family—Jim (deceased) and Eileen Gaye, the late Cecil and Verna Emmerson, Kevin  and  Launa  Emmerson and their son Austin, Greg and Sheree Emmerson and their daughter Amanda and granddaughter Kathleen. This connection became an integral part of his life, providing friendship and support that he cherished deeply.
Jim’s legacy is one of love, resilience, and a profound connection to the land and his family. He will be remembered not just for his dedication to farming, but for the warmth he brought to every relationship and the joy he found in simple moments. Though he has departed from this world, his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him. At Jim’s request, special urn bearers will be Kirstin Granquist and Lantana Hauser, who will honor his memory and the love they have for their Grandpa.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at Christie’s Funeral Home in Yorkton. Interment to follow at Yorkton Memorial Gardens, Highway #10 East, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.
