Earl (Buzz) Melanson, 90, of Oshawa, passed away on September 18, 2024.
Buzz was born on May 7, 1934, to Walter and Ida Melanson in Kapuskasing, Ontario. Buzz spent many happy years in ‘Kap’ with his family and playing hockey as #17, before moving to Toronto where he worked as a mechanical engineer for a corporate property management company.
Buzz retired in 1998, but he never sat still. He spent his time golfing (practically seven days a week!), cheering on Liverpool FC, doing the daily Sudoku in the morning paper, enjoying good conversations with friends over a pint of Guinness, spending time in his backyard gazebo listening to Neil Diamond, Rod Stewart and Paddy Reilly’s “The Fields of Athenry” and vacationing in Ireland – his absolute favourite place on earth.
Buzz was predeceased by his parents, his brother Robert Melanson and his sister Jean Contant (nee Melanson). He is survived by his wife Joan (nee Rooney), his brother Harold (Judy), his children Hope, Pat, Laurie (Gary) and Darren (Shantelle), his stepchildren Fiona and Karen (Todd) and the absolute joys of his life, his grandchildren T’mikah, M’kaylah, Bronson, Noah, Easton, Peyton, Carter, Brody, Evan and his great grandchildren Léo and Memphis.
Buzz was an exceptional man – kind, loving and generous – and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Everywhere Buzz went, someone was sure to be yelling out his name, greeting him as they would a best friend that they’ve known all their life. One of the last things he shared with his family was, “I have really great friends,” but we were the lucky ones to have found such a great friend in him.
A private celebration of life will be held for Buzz’s immediate family. If you would like to celebrate Buzz, his passion for education and his love of golf, the family has established the Buzz Melanson Memorial Golf Scholarship at Ontario Tech University and welcome your donations to ensure his legacy lives on.
