Obituary
Beloved father, husband, son, uncle, friend and outdoor explorer, Larry Lalonde died on Thursday, February 23, 2023.
While with us for his 54 years, Larry’s fierce loyalty and love of family, friends, and professional colleagues, touched all who came in contact with him. Most especially his precious children Emilia and Alexander. He was a hard fast champion of his wife Felicia, a loving son to Joyce and Larry (Sr.), a humorous and thoughtful brother to Kevin and Shari, and a brother-in-law to Joe and Marla. He was also a proud and loving uncle to Lucas, Andrew, and Storm; and an adoptive uncle to Leighton, Cavan, Matthew, James, Nathan, Anne, Sam, Daniel, and quite a few more.
His immeasurable love of the outdoors spilt over into all he did and touched, as nature has many lessons to share. No matter the season, Larry was forever outside, especially in the winter. Never one to pass up a run on the slopes with friends or his children, a mountain bike ride down Powderface trail with some buddies and a beer afterwards, a scramble up Yamnuska, or (when the opportunity came) a week-long backcountry ski trip.
His love of nature and the outdoors was solely for the pure pleasure of sharing it with others. Having brought along many friends (and his wife!) into the «cult» of skiing, backcountry skiing, ice climbing, scrambling, hiking, and mountain biking. Never needing a thank you, just satisfied with the joy it brought another. We know water sports were next on the list, canoeing and kayaking.
To know Larry is to know how unassuming he was in all his endeavours. As much as he loved his adventures, Larry also loved gathering with family and friends to share a meal, a bold red wine, and some laughs. He always greeted you with a smile, was curious for life’s updates and was always game to try new things, even the latest game or two pulled out after Christmas dinner. His other adventures were also in independent music, he was a big supporter of Canadian musicians, live music and independent radio showcasing the talent we have in our own backyard.
His integrity was a signature of his professional work. A love of collaboration and being in the community, in the areas of communications, public relations and stakeholder engagement. He was valued for his steady hand under pressure, his wise counsel was always steeped in a deep knowledge of his audience. An incredibly social person who poured his love of communicating into his work with a strong desire to really know people through dialogue. His expertise in these areas, by the height of his career, was a rare combination of industry knowledge and the ability to know how to talk with people, not at them.
These past seven months have, of course, been filled with heartache and sadness as his diagnosis was made and his illness progressed. However, it was also filled with blessings and love, and we are so grateful for the time together spent with family, and friends and the reconnections that have meant so much. He was surrounded by so much love. The adventure continues, rest now my love.
A Celebration of Life for this loving, humble and adventurous soul will be held on Monday, March 20, 2023. Please continue to check back here for further details.
Please, no flowers. While the intent is appreciated, you can pay tribute to Larry by taking a walk in the mountains one day and think of him. He will know you did and will be grateful he continues to share his love of the outdoors with others, still now and maybe he will be there walking with you too. Should you absolutely feel compelled to, you would honour Larry with a donation to Crossing The Divide Backcountry Adventure For Youth www.crossingthedivideexperience.org/ or to CKUA Radio at ckua.com/.
The family sends a thank you to Dr Stokes, Dr Tam, Dr Banerjee, and their teams at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, and to the most compassionate and incredible nurses in Area A, B and C at the systemic treatment area. We are most grateful for the incredible care and compassion from Dr Pawlik, Dr Lam, Dr Malagon, and the nurses in unit 73 at the Rockyview Hospital.
